If the boards are down ( rudders and center board) motor should be up.....
Yes yes.... I too have motor sailed but never when there was enough wind to push me over to 20 degrees. In Fact I cannot remember running much of anything but flat while power sailing..
One of the many HUGE differences between Our Sailboats and 99.9% of the others is??
All of ours, even.... with a Small Prop 2 smoke Tohatsu, they will hit beyond 12 MPH and maybe even 15 MPH under power. Mine with a Mercury 50 4 stroke i.e. more torque and add the big foot / big prop will do close to 20 MPH. Thats Not Stripped out thats with a lot of stuff on board, a LOT of Stuff!
Allow me to ask you, how fast do you think most sailboats go under engine only power ? Most run in or about 5 to 7 mph....
The reason? Much of the answer will be Hull Design NOT HP...
So back to ...Those 3 boards.... They were never meant/designed to operate under that kind 12 to 30 + MPH stress and strain among other issues...and there are Major Ooooppss SHI- !!!! Hold ON !! Handling issues !!!
The Vast Majority of the time on board, its either Sailing
Allow me to ask you? Do you understand how a motor can over power your sails and the likely consequences of such actions..

rolling the boat over.
Will the motor be starved for oil ?
A two-stroke would be OK, but I'm not sure of the limit of the 4-strokes.
I don't have much sailing experience, but I think it can be an advantage to
keep some sail up in rough conditions, just to steady the boat, and reduce the rolling, even
if sails alone is not enough to make headway.
