IF? We used 3/4" or better yet 1" Oak Faced Plywood and Veneered the two corners? Reduced the depth of the Front pull drawers and there by allowed 1 back and 1 middle rib , Might that be strong enough to support a persons weight?
Hummm I have 1 piece of 3/4" maple for another project I am working on in the house. Maybe tomorrow I set up some blocks and see if it will hold my weight.. The Spans not that big humm maybe?

As for thickness, I used 1/2" thick oak-sided plywood for the main part of the table. Underneath I used 3/4" thick ribs made from pine and Gorilla-glued and screwed with brass screws. I always use brass on boats to avoid corrosion. The combined parts make for a very strong, but reasonably lightweight table. You don't need 3/4" thick plywood - it's overkill IMHO.

Not sure what you mean by "outside oak corner", but let me see if I can help... the edging I used to make the 'lip' was some of this stuff, in oak:



Lengths were cut and the ends rounded to suit. I then applied the strips with wood glue and some small brass pin-nails that were later sunk with a nail set and filled so to be invisible. Once it was all dry I shaved off the overhanging remainder of the "L" channels off the bottom of the table and sanded to finish.

As for the actual round corner edges of the table, before applying the "L" channels I applied some oak veneer banding to cover the end-grain of the oak plywood... like this stuff:

Yep That's an Outside Corner trim versus say an Inside Corner trim..
I just got done adding a Butlers Pantry in the Dining room with B.B. drawer slides that self set(?) in the retracted position. Not enough to secure "at sea" so I'll have to add magnetics of some sort..

watch those magnets if you use any electronics on you table ie gps or laptop, that could get expensive

Hummm I was thinking ? 3/4" of plywood and a 1" air gap would make that issue void? How could I test for that?
Further thought is to add our favorite sailing waters chart and epoxy over that for the top as well. Maybe even have Kinkos Paper copy that chart and "Antique it".... before the epoxy covering?

You don't need to do that. Just make the slides with a tight enough clearance to make them a bit 'stiff' and it will work just fine... that's how mine work. There's enough resistance along the sides of the drawers to prevent them opening without direct force. But, if you feel that's a serious problem, I'd just install a small tang of bent stainless strip as a catch - mounted at the end of the drawer and springing down slightly to catch the edge of the drawer, you would then push it up to release the drawer... no need for fancy magnets.

Yes, you could, but the point of the reinforcing supports is to support the stress of spanning between the two dinette seat flanges, so that you can sit/sleep on the table without it bending or (God forbid) snapping... remember, when you sit up in bed your butt will be near the center of the table - and there may be two of you sleeping on that berth, so double it - and so the center of that table may have to deal with loads in excess of 300 lbs.(!) If you located the supports on a port-starboard axis you'd lose their 'spanning' support between the dinette seat flanges and would likely stress the table in between one of the reinforcements with the potential of a failure... no?? Plus, by making it thinner and spanning it fore-aft you make it lighter and easier to handle, store, etc.

And as for the Hawking.... hardly... I'm a rank amateur compared to several on this board.

Can't be... that's what mine smell like... with just a hint of sauteed morels.

Took the boat out this weekend for my 12 yo daughter's b-day. It was 4 girls and my wife and I (6 total). It was a bit tight but we had fun. We did not sail at all, we just went out to a cove and BBQ and they swam in the water a little. The only problem I ran into is that all the wood on the port side of the boat makes it lean to the port side a little. Not a big deal but we were motoring with no water in the ballast, 6 people, camping gear, and no keel down, we turned into our cove and hit a strong current and a strong side wind and we went WAY over, at least 25 degrees. Needles to say we filled the water ballast after that and put the keel down. Anyone ever have the same problem with an overloaded boat and keeling over like that just motoring without sailing?

I have a 26X and have had 7 people aboard (4 were 10-11 years old) and many times with 5-6 people. On several occasions I have had the ballast out and when no real bad heeling.
On the other hand I make a point of keeping my weight as low as possible. The galley mods probably equate to a 180-200 lb person always sitting on the port seat, and if you think in those terms when balancing the boat it should help.

One time waves came up fast and I simply asked those willing to go below and sit at the table and port seat and a lot of the back and forth heel goes away. from a purely physics point of view, for every weight addition there should be an equal but opposite weight addition.
