Add a couple of interior ribs for strength? What about weight? Depending on the thickness it might well be very light? Adding weight? Is there an issue with pouring hot lead into a SS vessel? Is there an issue with dissimilar metals...aka lead and chrome? With a small wing would we still need for the D.B. to be heavier than stock? How much heavier than stock? Might 10 or 15 pounds of extra weight make enough difference to be profitably noticeable? Might you still have it ported for water ballast above the permanent weight, in the bottom?
What would the design of the wing have to be ? Flat? Arched ? Convex or concave? Angled with the nose down?
Does the use of SS eliminate a built in safety factor for running aground? ( Hull Damage? )
Should we / I / someone start a thread to kick this around?
Yes someone has already made a SS D/B on this site I beleive he posted it in the mods section , A wing would & should have an up-ward swing to it so as when fully retracted it would follow the contour of the hull, also this would dig in as to say when the boat is trying to slip sideways "Imangine cupping your hands in the water & lift " same resistance, I beleive the SS D/B was heavy enough not to require extra weight but if extra ballast was desired i'd go with expoxing sand into the bottom half just as Macgregor does with the #300 of ballast at the bottom of the D/B trunk
As for beaching a wing could be made removable with two pins so as when you get into say three feet of water jump in lower D/B 1ft pull pins wha la reverse when leaving. Myself I 'd be more inclined to leave the boat floating in one or two feet of water no worries of removing bottom paint or unneccary stress on the hull of a heavly laiden boat , I live in the boat three or four days a week in the summer or more, that maybe changing soon !
