What about weight? Depending on the thickness it might well be very light? Adding weight? Is there an issue with pouring hot lead into a SS vessel? Is there an issue with dissimilar metals...aka lead and chrome? With a small wing would we still need for the D.B. to be heavier than stock? How much heavier than stock? Might 10 or 15 pounds of extra weight make enough difference to be profitably noticeable? Might you still have it ported for water ballast above the permanent weight, in the bottom?
What would the design of the wing have to be ? Flat? Arched ? Convex or concave? Angled with the nose down?
Does the use of SS eliminate a built in safety factor for running aground? ( Hull Damage? )
Should we / I / someone start a thread to kick this around?

Yes someone has already made a SS D/B on this site I beleive he posted it in the mods section , A wing would & should have an up-ward swing to it so as when fully retracted it would follow the contour of the hull, also this would dig in as to say when the boat is trying to slip sideways "Imangine cupping your hands in the water & lift " same resistance, I beleive the SS D/B was heavy enough not to require extra weight but if extra ballast was desired i'd go with expoxing sand into the bottom half just as Macgregor does with the #300 of ballast at the bottom of the D/B trunk
As for beaching a wing could be made removable with two pins so as when you get into say three feet of water jump in lower D/B 1ft pull pins wha la reverse when leaving. Myself I 'd be more inclined to leave the boat floating in one or two feet of water no worries of removing bottom paint or unneccary stress on the hull of a heavly laiden boat , I live in the boat three or four days a week in the summer or more, that maybe changing soon ! :P so my boat is always heavy laided so I do not require any extra ballast for sailing my clipper rig 8) . But I beleive a wing would be a plus in helping to point more into the wind

J: I will look around on and in the mods .. I would love to be able to sail my boat as do THE Mad Men Of Ontario!!!
As soon as and if in fact I ....make the desired move to Florida will have the assistance of an incredible engineer and I really desire to make my boat better..
I will attempt to keep some sort of thread alive as we work towards this goal..
Low and behold, due to my ignorance, I would have speculated the need to make the nose dive.... so as to draw the boat down as I add more sail for more speed.. I will no doubt work in glass and carbon fiber for strength..

Remember if you add weight to your D/B it will lower the bow slightly , Ya know I did not add two anchors onto a double anchor roller fer nothing, weight of both anchors extended beyond the bow where they can be stored outa the way more room for rode in anchor locker ! this all adds up to help lift the stern outa the water for faster sailing

I have added in the mods section, my new bracket made from SS, a better upgrade.

The dagger board is at the shipwrights just now, getting the new insert glassed in & I am adding some lead to the bottom, will post the photos when the board comes back in a couple of weeks

I thought about adding lead in the bottom of the current dagger board. I would NEVER replace the whole dagger board with metal. I destroyed one once motoring in 22ft of water (yes, WTF!) and was glad to learn that the dagger acts like a circuit breaker for that sort of thing. That would not be the case with a stainless dagger board. The trunk had no signs of damage and a new one was shipped to my door for under $400.

I am with you Rob.. I will look into just building a new foot ( carbon fiber or kevlar, and epoxy )on my D.B. to accept the wing.. Jack Sparrow has his Wing...in the mods section and I have sent him a E-mail... through this board, asking him a couple questions..
I do like the idea of just using sand and epoxy for the weight. 10 to 15 lbs?? How much difference will I see from that? I am desiring to Run flatter as flat is fast and to, point better, the wing should help there. I intend to use 1/4 maybe 3/8 Aluminum plate for the wing.. I will embed SS rod couplings to attach and remove the wing as necessary, as I decide what size the wing needs to be.
