Yes, the crack is a concern, and I would definitely hire a surveyor to check the boat out.
As far as the price goes, yes, it is low, but I would not say it is alarmingly low.
I paid $18K for my 26M 2 years ago, and she was in excellent condition, and fully loaded with accessories. I have a friend who is a marine surveyor in San Diego, and he gave her a clean bill of health. The seller was just anxious to unload the boat.

Yep thats often said about a lot of toys and other things. All bought on impulse or lacking knowledge in the purchase.
Lots of stuff is purchased by people only to find out.. Its not fun.. Its very costly.. It takes forever to get good at...The initial cost is a small portion of the overall cost. Its now a $$$$$$ cloths rack.. That's very common.. There are a number of things I can do , that I make look, so easy...but it wasn't ....my first effort.. Maybe .. we all can.. Maybe we all have a talent to "do" something so well ....it looks easy to others , until they try and do it themselves..As a Scuba and X-Country and Telmark Ski Instructor I have seen a lot of people buy a lot of $$$$$ equipment and never get good at those sports.. Most / Many...end up selling $$$$$$$$ for $... :( , after they quit because it was harder than they thought it was.. Took longer to learn than they thought it would.. for what ever reason or excuse .. lost Interest...
IMHO.. Best deals around ? Dime on the dollar? Workout Equipment.. I bought a CMC Parabody... Top of the line for $500.. That guy was sooooooooooooo glad to get rid of it hahahaha Just so he didnt have to hear any more about it , from the wife hahaha( they both should have kept it and used it... HOURLY hahaha)
One toy that can be harder to operate ( and do it well )...than it looks like at the shows... is Shop Smith All In One..

dlanderson,

I know that "The day I sold my boat...." is an old cliche'.

But, in my case it will be a very sad day. My Admiral and I are getting on, so to speak. I totally realize that within a few short years we will no longer have the stamina, or agility, to sail.

We shall always treasure our times aboard our Mac. We shall always treasure the friendships that we have made.

The wife and I , now 64 & 60 become attracted to this sport/endeavor..partially due to its potential long term / late in life involvement.. We see Scuba in a similar vein.. Things we enjoy doing together and that we can, do together , for a relatively long time ... Not so, with Skiing and the Motorcycle..Though we see a lot of older riders.. we see a Lot of them, that truly are, a menace on the road and just wont admit it, or not till the hurt or kill themselves or someone else.. Of all the activities we can do together this one we feel is pretty low impact, pretty safefor all concerned and, could take us,
well into our golden years, smiling all the way.

Rick,

I'm not in the grave, just yet.

But, I might want to bet: double, or nothing.

My terms, of course!

The two best sailing days in my life...

1 The day I bought my boat

2 The day my 10 year old sailed it and picked up a mooring on Cape Cod..

Im going to be 90 on the oxygen tent on anchor on Cuttyhunk with G_G_G_G grandkids all round - when Neptune claims me they can dump me overboard (3 miles offshore of course)

I agree but extended to all the Boats I have owned. I often laugh at my own comments ....Boat is a hole in your pocket surrounded with water.
I enjoyed every Boat I had and regardless of the losses when I sold them I always had a lump in my throte as the new owner took it away.
I remember all the good times and bad with the boats and wouldn't change a thing.
Back 3-4 decades ago I had moorings in Bass River, Cotuit,Lewis Bay and a slip at Hyannis Marina. All diffrent Sailboats.
Somehow my memory never fails me in all the trips and working on the boats.
Someday in near future I will Trailer my Mac.X up to Cape Cod and spend the Summer Cruiseing the Islands. (1.5 years til retirement). Most of my family lives there.

Actually, I think the PO really loved the boat, and didn't want to sell it. He is an airline pilot, and he took really meticulous care of the boat. They even had it in Hawaii for a while, where his wife ran a real estate business (they shipped it over, not sailed it :P ) I suspect he was under some pressure from the Admiral to sell it. I know they didn't sail the boat at all, because the boom was not installed, and the sails were packed away. I think they used it mostly for motoring around Newport Harbor and entertaining their friends. I suspect this because of the couple bottles of nice Merlot that I discovered in one of the lockers :D I believe they mentioned that they wanted to buy a boat that could seat more people, like an electric Duffy. They were an interesting couple, very nice people. I do believe there was sadness in his eyes when he let it go for that price. It made my day!

Inspected the boat I'm thinking of buying.

Positives - Engine started right up, Upgraded trailer w/surge brakes, Mast raising system, New main and jib still in the bag, ICOM M422 VHF, Garmin 540s GPS, Two fuel tanks.

Negatives - Still worried about the one crack on the port side pictures below, also included a picture of small cracks in the gel coat, crazing?

Plan on talking with the local marina that did the servicing on this boat and see what they think about the crack. I'm worried about the location of the crack. If normal sailing tension is placed on the rigging attached at this point will it rip out of the deck? Another area of concern is areas of cracking in the gel coat shown in the picture below. I would appreciate any and all opinons.

Thanks,
Ray

Ray, that's at least $1000 worth of decent electronics. The gelcoat cracks in the blue are from being hit relatively hard by something--another boat's bow, A dock corner, or who knows what while trying to trailer maybe--depends on exactly where it is. That kind of impact usually comes with some delamination of the fiberglass behind it, but you will be able to hear a difference if you tap around the "good" fiberglass areas with a small rubber mallet or the handle of a tool. If there's a difference in tone behind the gelcoat cracks (it would go "deeper" or "duller" sounding from the sharper taps near the good fiberglass), that indicates delamination which will reduce structural integrity. I all likelihood it'll never be a problem, but you definitely don't want to get hit in the same spot again.

The stress fracture below the chainplate is a bit more troublesome and appears from having the stays WAY over tensioned for a long period of time. The stays should be taught but not tight. In any case, it is repairable but I would definitely have it professionally done. Given the fact that the black rubrail below it appears to have some minor damage as well, it may have also been caused by an impact combined with the stay tension. The boat possibly hit a pier sideways at that point.

The repair is going to consist of cutting out the damaged fiberglass and doing new layup behind it, from the inside of the boat. It's going to be difficult to get to the area under the chainplate because the liner is right behind it. You can have the repair made thicker than the original and overlap the existing undamaged fiberglass on the interior side. This will ensure that any factory defect that might have contributed to the problem is completely remediated and will prevent a future stress fracture in the same place.

The area behind the blue gelcoat is likely directly accessible from the inside of the boat and should be a piece of cake to fix other than matching the blue gelcoat color.

You're definitely saving enough on the cost of this boat to make it worth the cost of professional fiberglass repair in my opinion. Expect to pay materials + about $75 per hour, and I'd expect this job to be in the $1000 range for a spotless repair that you can't tell was ever damaged. If you've got the time, the best thing to do would be to get a repair estimate from a local glass shop before you buy and add it to the "real" price of the boat.
