I put out a lot of scope though and have 30 feet of chain and the line is 200 feet of 7/16 3 twist on the Manson and 30 feet of chain and 200 feet of 3/8 on the claw. If we are by ourselves, usually the case, I take what ever depth Ruth is yelling at me and multiply it by at least 10. Since you need to add the depth to the deck height that usually gets me pretty close or a little over the recommended length and that is how much line is out not counting the chain. The chain is extra insurance past that. If we are in real shallow water I'll still put out at least 60-70 feet of line plus the chain. What do you have to loose as long as you are not going to swing on anchor into anything or the bottom?
We were using the claw as the primary and putting the Manson down as a secondary if we thought we needed it then I started thinking why not use the best as the primary. If I have any doubts at all we put down a second anchor. So far in over 100 nights on the hook I only adjusted the rode once in the night....

.....that I remember. I sleep pretty sound and just don't want to be messing with the anchor in the middle of the night in the dark.
Once we got over to the keys we could always see the bottom, so even if we were in an area with grass we always found sand in it. Maybe only 10 feet in diameter, but that was enough to put the anchor into.
We took out at South Dade in May. That must of been your Mac we saw there,
