Balsa core was (is) used in race boat decking to reduce weight but can become spongy if water logged. Small sections can be repaired by injecting epoxy into the core to stiffen it up.

I guess the sailing season is ending. Just found 2 Mac's list in Maryland on craiglist.

A '97 for $10,500 or offer and a 2005 (includes a 99 Dodge Durango tow vehicle) for $22,500. Pity, both look really nice.

There are differences in the different years of I tend to look at 2000 and newer. I prefer the way wood is not used. I prefer the new style rudders. I prefer the ladder over the step. If the deal were sweet enough, I would look at pre 2000, but it would need to be a great price to pull me in. The older the boat, the older the stuff on the boat, is another factor. If the boat was a very great bargain, it would get snatched up locally.. If you get him down to 7500 than it would be worth a road trip for me.

I already own a so I'm not looking to buy anything. Just noticed that people are selling off their boats now that the season is over. If I were a seller, I would put it on the market the first warm day of spring when people get the fever (same as a motorcycle). Then it's a sellers market because of the "got to have it now" attitude.

There is much less seasonal price volatility in Macs since

1 they are priced at the bottom end to start

2 they are trailerable so no storage or hauling fees

This makes it much easier to buy a boat anytime of year.

Cat - I would tend to agree that Mac's are not going to lose many thousands of $, but the season could mean the difference between getting 10,500 or taking Gary up on his offer of 7,500. Just simply more buyers up north in warm weather. Not as many people willing to spend 10 grand and then wait 6 months to use it than there are those that know what the X or M will give them will buy it now and wait for warm weather to use.

I would think that prices would drop some at the end of the season for boats, just like motorcycles do up in the northern areas. In the spring, prices for these items go up.....

John at Supersport Marine still has the one I looked at. 11000 for an 8HP or 12000 for the same boat with a 60 HP. That is the newer 2000 model. The boat is clean and not all mod filled with someones ideas.
