Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
I'm really not all that fussy (the Admiral is, though, for sure), and my taste buds don't work all that well, but that nylon taste annoys me almost as much as diet soda (which has an aftertaste that stays with me for hours).
I'm interested in the solution, if there is one, as it would be nice to not have to carry bottled water. For now, I need to put money into other parts of the boat, but I'm curious how well those filters work.

tkanzler - I'm hoping there is a solution too!
I also wonder why there is no bad plastic/nylon taste in the "plastic" bottles that we bring the potable water on board to drink? Water tastes fine in a cheap plastic bottle ... why not in an expensive expandable bladder

Probably if you wanted to pay $1000 for a tank that was lined with mylar, you could do that. I don't think the tanks are made for taste, their primary feature is flexibility. Most of the price of a bottle of water is the plastic properties that minimized plastic taste.Wind Chime wrote:

Best you can try is a filter close to the tap, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Vinyl taste is hard to remove.

Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
I have the same bladder for 5 years and only use the water for cleaning dishes and such. We have a R.O system at our house and fill Gal. Jugs for drinking on boat.
We do add a tablespoon of clorine each fill up in the bladder.

I followed the instructions and cleaned with a vinegar solution, but it still has that plastic rubbery taste.
Any ideas on how to get the plastic tase out of the water?

Well it's got me beat because although I couldn't drink water out of our camper trailer tanks (gal) that were filled with the garden hose, it made a huge difference once we used food grade hoses and the filters I linked above, when we put the bladder in the
in 2006 it tasted perfect from day one but haven't tested it off the bypass galley tap?
Those filters do remove taste and we had filled the tank with what could only be described as muddy water in the camper trailer and other than the primary filter being half full of mud and the secondary perfectly clean you would not have known it was not bottled water and that was after 5 months use.
On the
the only bad experience was filling from what we thought was fresh water at the top of an estuary but found out it was brackish salt a few inches below the surface where I dropped the filler hose but ok once pumped out and refilled.
Pretty sure our bladder is a plastimo about 120l under the rear bunk but it only holds about 100 due to space constraints.

We have used bladders for 7 years and no taste but use similar filter to this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Basic-Water- ... 3a7fab8e81 and food grade hoses.
Are you using the twin (two) cartrige filter system like in your ebay link?
What is the difference between the single and the dual filter systems?

Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
Boblee,
If you are refering to my post, let me give you more info.
I never tasted the water from my bladder tank. It is used for only washing dishes, etc, never for drinking.
As stated I perfer My water that has less than .35 migs compared to city water that has over 180.
My R.O system is puified water with no chemicals, bacterior ETC.
Why I fill Gal. Jugs for drinking water.
Much better than so called Purified water you fill at local markets or bottled water.
Even useing the Fresh water white hose to fill tank doesn't say it's safe as water left in it can mildew fast. I never trust City water.
You can always put in the Tablespoon of Clorine and run it thru a Charcol filter and have a drinkable water.
You still need to add tablits or a teaspoon of Clorine to kill bacterior as most filters do not.
A full R.O system is needed for killing bacterior and purifying water and that system is not pratical on our boats.
Just easy for us to carry 2-3 gals drinking water and 6 frozzen water botters in cooler.
I went for a 3 year cruise on my 35ft thru S.America, had a 40 gal. monel water tank and collected rainwater off canipys and deck thu a water filter and added clorine.
Had the sh~t sometimes but body addapted. (Probably from cheep Rum)
Never tasted the clorine with the rum.

Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
If you want to try to filter the taste, you will want a quality filter with some carbon/charcoal filtering in it
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005V0 ... d_i=507846
Probably a good idea to filter any water sitting in a tank for junk. You never really know what's in that tank, especially if you fill from strange docks.

While we're at it, just forget the whole bladder and extra weight and run a straight thru hull with water purifier (a real one) or de-selanator $$

Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
Yes Wind Chime we use the double filter installed at the back of the galley, not exactly sure what micron rating the primary is now but think it's 1 micron and the secondary charcoal is .5 but we have used 2microns for the primary and 1 for the secondary with the same results, do drink a bit of water and enoy the water from the filters.
Originally we started using these due to the different supplies around the country with resulting bad bellies named after whatever area we visited and if it happens now it's because we have used local water straight, some of the puddles we have filled from over the years have been very suspect but beggers can't be choosers.
Of course we should IMHO let our gut get used to some bacteria but when you are changing supplies regularly just find these filters save a lot of time on the porcelain motorbike especially when it is inconvenient to be laid up.

Re: Water Bladder Plastic Taste
Thanks Boblee,
Did the dual-filter system affect your water pressure at all?
We just have the small standard DC-electric pump, I have concern that maybe all we'll get is a dribble of water after going thought the dual filter system.
