I'll take a stab here. Do these motors have a low oil pressure cut-off? At the higher rpm you might be starving the sensor for a number of reasons( low oil level, worn pump, clogged oil passages). I know nothing about big outboards, but alot of commercial vehicles have such devises to save the motor if there is an unexpected oil pressure drop.

Ppossibly, I can't recall an engine cutoff with low oil pressure on cars but a car isnt going to kill you if it siezes miles from home. good thinking.

Searching reveals it should be a warning light. Only cutoff I can find is the lanyard. Stories from racers talk about changing the rev limiter... Not a rev cutoff. But the engine is older carb model.

What particular module do you have? :|
Here's their manual download pages:

Here's a link to the MD 50A manual:

I didn't look at everything but couldn't immediately find anything specific - have a look.

If it is a CDI engine it is likely the kill switch/wire and the over-rev limiter. Mine failed recently and cut the engine. Once I disconnected no problems. These boxes fail on occasion. Again if CDI the stator/trigger are super simple and you'll get spark.
