Re: etec input needed
I think you will find the eTec is a great motor. Like any motor, there are always those with problems, but most seem to really like this motor.
You have to title the motor? So what, you have 3 titles? Trailer, Boat and Motor?

Re: etec input needed
They have evolved into what they are today, so some of the earlier E-tecs did have their issues. I'm using the word "early" because I don't know enough to give you exact years. There are online forums dedicated to the e-tecs, so you will get a lot more useful info from those. But based on what you have told us you have done well!

Hey Bahama,
Ya dun good kid
I'd have taken that deal & I already Got a 90!
Seriously, the E-tecs that might have issues are the earlier models, pre '08 , like mine
No more transom views for you...
Enjoy

Yeah .either give it away or.make a kids play set out of it .its a.late 80's 19 foot cruddy cabin wellcracft cruddy cabin that some body repowered .bought new trailer and put a really nice bracket to mount motor on .new gel batteries .GPS .then took a loan out at a pawn shop and and paid on it for 9 months before getting behind in payments and losing it .I still don't know what to do ? Seemed like a good idea at the time ..since I have evinrude now the bolt holes are supposed to line up I might mount it and run it I just don't know if I could ever trust it for a Bahama trip ?dlandersson wrote:The boat will be free?![]()

Re: etec input needed
Trawling (low consumption) speed is 5 knots on an M or an X irrespective of motor. Best speed is WOT-10%, which with an ETEC-90 should be around 21..22 knots. Backing down 10% saves about 1gph and only costs between 0..2 knots of speed depending on the sea-state.bahama bound wrote: Thanks .so I hear around 5 kts. I knew somebody that has a.Gemini cat with a high.thrust Yamaha 15 and they swore.they burned a.litre a hour at 6 knots .but top speed was around 8 knots .

Re: etec input needed
It's believable. Smaller engines are up to twice as efficient as larger at displacement speeds, and a cat has lower drag in the water than a Mac.bahama bound wrote:I knew somebody that has a.Gemini cat with a high.thrust Yamaha 15 and they swore.they burned a.litre a hour at 6 knots .but top speed was around 8 knots .

Re: etec input needed
The displeasure with the Evinrude line was a decade ago, over so called FICHT fuel injection - which ended up being, in short, a Charlie FICHT.
The failure of this system is sometimes cited as causing the bankruptcy of OMC, from which Evinrude and Johnson were sold to BRP in about 2000. Evinrude completely redesigned the ETEC system from the FICHT system - no worries there..... there are still a lot of FICHT customers on top of post offices with rifles looking for evinrude employees...ok, maybe just on the internet

Re: etec input needed
And none of the new engineering was exactly breakthrough technology, they pretty much mirrored what the other two manufacturers were also developing. I think they must share the same pool of mech engnr's. There's very little difference between merc optimax, evinrude etec and tohotsu tldi, They all work very well and are very efficient and really closed the gap between 4 stroke qualities and eliminated most of the old 2 stroke maladies that used to exist. However at the cost of complexity, there is now multiple pumps, sensors, injectors, and of course a computer or two, along with eliminating at least 50% of available service persons who are intelligent enough to work on them, much the same as the auto industry.

Re: etec input needed
Got back Saturday night from Florida had a blast .kids were swimming with the manatees .met some guides that were running etecs and said they loved them .put 500-600 hours a year on them .so today I go outside.while its sunny and 75 and put a battery charger on the etec 90 I bought .after charging for a.couple hours I tried it and it spun about 6 times and banged off and sounded really strong .I let it run for about a hour and a half ! Is the pee hole the same hole you screw the hose to .couldn't see a pee hole anywhere on the motor .came with stainless 13 3/ 4 x17 mirage stainless prop and factory 15 pitch prop .also while it was running there was a small amount of spray behind the lower cowling right behind where the hose screws in ??? Is this normal ???.I'm still not sure I'm gonna use it or not but I gotta say I'm kinda impressed with it ! Its a.2008. Motor but not put into service til 2011 then was pawned at the.pawn shop in early 2013 .I don't believe its been run well over a year .I literally have nothing in it .just not sure what to do with it ! It s salt water series too what ever .that means ?
