DonT, I like your design and method of getting the boat off the trailer. Very nice. Extra points for doing all that in such a narrow space!

I've got about two weekends of boat projects to get ready for summer but each weekend I'm getting beat up with car repair...this weekend is rear coil springs and front brakes on the Admirals car, followed by sway links on mine.

Still have two engine codes to clear for inspection , too.

Very cool. Codes are easy to clear but to pass Inspex in most states you also have to have the status of the various checks "ready" on the car computer. Volvo is peculiar in that these checks take almost 100 miles to complete. Most cars take about 10 miles (see the " drive for a day" note on the ad for Auto). With Volvo it's more like "drive for a week"

They do this so you can't pass inspection by just clearing your codes and they claiming you don't have a problem. Most codes take a few days of driving to reappear - the system tolerates several errors before it will decide something is really broken and set a code in memory.

I have a knock sensor that has to be replaced that I'm pretty sure means disassembling the whole induction system to get to it. 6 hours labour on books at 90 bucks an hour. That's too much boat money to give away.

I have to say I'm impressed with the robustness of OBD II. Not too many 16 year old hardware systems in nasty environments survive at the consumer level.

That is a cool gadget though, matt.

A lot of them are key on-off cycles, Pay a neighbor kid 10 bucks to head down the freeway and take every exit,kill restart engine for 50 miles each way. in three hours you'll have your system ready status back.....

yep going to be a very busy time for the next two months, winter stay way too long & late , was able to wire up & install my sub whoofer :) , got my new hatchway entrance in black plexi glass now made & finished , got a leaky window to repair , my new 80$ 120v/12v 22" led tv & two 3X10 opening ports to install , finish installing my new drapes , then look @ my eng miss had inj sticking last fall ! :( , wash the bottom off . my mast spreader led lights to install, new bow lights , search & destroy light :D , add two my blocks to my traveler on , on ,
Fri I just removed the snow blower , chains , weights & installed the grass cutting deck , Sat cleaned up the yard , Sun replaced my trk's front brk's & rotors & rear brk's & parking brk shoes removed my winter tires & installed my nice summer rims & tires . Next wk-end eng\abs light on hoping its from my abs|speed sensor which I checked & is shorting out got a new one 180$ :evil: to install this coming wk-end , sometime this summer got to tune the trk up spark plugs r now due for replacement , hope it stays dry for the rest of the week so as I can get the grass all cut before the wk-end , hope all this work will help me burn off my extra 10# I put on this winter LOL now any volunteers willing how to learn to do boat mods please contact me & I will gladly show U how to mod my boat with my supervision :arrow: :idea: :wink:

Wow! So they connect to the computer? Makes sense I suppose. Probably obtains good data from it. I recall when I lived in NJ, they put my car on a treadmill to get a more realistic emissions reading. They only stuck the exhaust with a sensor though.

BTW, in Montana there is no vehicle inspection. Makes dealing with dash lights easier, but I really would like to know that all cars have working breaks and signals.

That dongle device looks cool. Wish there was one for my Suzuki outboard.

In general, all the emission inspection station will do is read the OBDII codes - for cars 1996 and newer. If your car is older than that, you are a dinosaur and will need to drive on the treadmill :D

I lived in NJ when they first started those shenanigans, but they had brake testing via pads that measured force while stopping hard, plus the dyno loading while sniffing the tailpipe. It was a mess, and never worked right (plus investigations into who got the contract for supplying the equipment and how - you know; the usual :D ). Left the state 12 years ago, so things must have changed.

Me too, 11 years ago. Just after that new real estate tax was enacted. Ouch as the door hit me on the way out.

I was impressed (for lack of a better term) at all they inspected. My car once failed because the gear shifter needle didn't line up correctly.
Folks used to take out air filters and other tricks to pass. Then then started checking for that.
