Hahaha I use the rudders as depth sounders and I sail the M with NO board down whatsoever quite often. The rotating mast makes a huge difference, trust me. If it sticks you could oil it once in a while, or yank the boom end back to help it. The M is half the price of the edge. You could spend another six grand like I have and still have a much less expensive boat.

Hmmm, no more Catalina power sailor either...and hunter don't even list the edge on their past models page of their website. It's like it never existed... call the x files!!

Having a trailer-able boat does not mean its only used as that. It means it's more versatile. While in a slip, it is out on the water within in moments of stepping on board. Real sweet If one wants to sail on another body of water, or use it as a waterbago to travel across the country, then onto the trailer, and off you go for a day, week, month, etc., to another lake, river, or ocean, in another state, or even country.

We have a huge lake to sail on, however there are no marinas with lifts. Therefore, every boat on there has to be wheeled in by the owner and wheeled home in the winter. The Mac is the largest boat I could buy that I can trailer home without a special permit. We keep it in a slip in the summer for convenience. After a 90 minute drive to get there, I don't want to deal with launching and rigging.
No other boat offers as much room and allows me to take it home myself.
As a bonus, if I want to travel further, I have the option to take it wherever by myself.
The edge was so heavy, you really need a serious tow beast, which for many is another expense.

Just because it's MY opinion does not make me right. In fact I am always amazed at how many people slip trailerable boats - to me it just seems nutty, but this is a VERY OLD argument I lost many many years ago.

I know that many people who own MAC boats keep them in a slip. Nick, the guy that has a MAC in the Harbor here has his X boat in the water since the day he got it. The point I'm making is that if your going to keep it in a slip all the time why not just get a keel boat in the first place? Now, that is MY point, and it's really nuts because over and over again Roger MacGregor proved me and people smarter than me wrong on this point. The "keel or not to keel 26 foot boat" has a long history of debate over here in SoCal that some of you may not know about:

Back in the days when naval architects designed sailboats there was not a lot of trailer options. When Lyle Hess designed the Balboa 26 in 1969 he engineered the option to put it on a trailer. The boat had 2 configurations: Retractable Keel or Fixed Keel. When Whitney Peden of Coastal Recreation Company (a direct competitor of Roger who had his factory right there in the same neighborhood as Roger) bought the Balboa Boat company from (I think) Arther Marine he had previously also hired naval architect Peter Barret to design a SMALLER trailerable boat in the 22 to 23 foot class. SOUND FAMILIAR??
Anyways, people bought the Balboa 26 WITH THE RETRACTABLE KEEL 5 TO 1! Even though 80% of the Balboa customers kept their boat in a slip!! (The B26 is a 4000 Lb boat!)

Whitney who was already selling 23 foot boats (the Aquarius) realized that people were moving towards a bigger boat to trailer and decided to BUY the Balboa instead of creating a new 26 foot boat from scratch. He later tried to build one called the LaPaz (it was a motor sailor) because he could see that the bigger boats were going to take over the market. He just could not figure out how to build a boat that was 26 feet long that did not weight more than 4000 pounds (the same mistake Hunter made).

Really, if I were going to get a TRALERABLE 26 foot boat that was NOT the MACM (or the X for that fact) CLEARLY if I was not caring about weight and I wanted a "heavy duty build" I would take the Balboa 26 over the Hunter ANY DAY. It's FASTER, had MORE ROOM, better accommodations - is a better build, and has real open ocean PAC sailing credentials (something the Edge will NEVER have). I have spent many hours on the B26 and I can tell you the trailer process, launch and tow operation is a TOTAL NIGHTMARE! It's a really heavy boat. But a VERY good boat.

There have been many many really GOOD trailerable sailboats offered to the public but they have all gone the way of the Doe Doe bird. Honestly because of my history and experience with the trailer sailboats I never had any faith in the Hunter as a trailer boat from the first day I saw it and i was shocked that such a big reputable boat builder would make the same mistake that so many have made before them.

If I could afford a slip I really would probably have a keel boat. But again, that's just me. Really, even if I COULD afford a slip I probably would not have one anyways because I love to travel so much and I hate being stuck sailing in the same place over and over all the time - I like to experience other places.

If I was really rich and wealthy like some of the people I have read about here in this blog I would probably do exactly what they do (just like Roger does) I would have a nice big 70 footer in the slip in front of my house and a MACM parked on a trailer in the garage next to my house and would probably spend more time in the 26 foot boat than the 70 footer.

People are weird - don't get mad at me just because sometimes 'I don't get it'.

I admit that slipping a trailer boat is a very popular thing to do. But while we are being honest let's also admit what we all know is the truth about the "Hunter Edge":

The Hunter Edge was a total copy of a MACM boat, everyone know it, and Hunter made no bones about making the "Edge" even LOOK LIKE the M boat! It was a total copy - so why buy a copy???

Beauty about macs that Beene & I have found is when u get into a marina late & ask for a slip & they say they r full & we see a couple of mty slips & point @ them & they say their too shallow for ur big boat , we tie off go look @ them & come back to the harbour master & say their deep enough for us & he says ok go for it & then watch in amazement @ all the dock queens waving too us stop before u run aground & we wave & smile @ them while they r looking @ us like we must be really stupid or something , then try to figure out how the heck they do that !! as we tie up too them there too shallow slips for our big boats

I sorta did that coming into the inlet at last year's MMOR. I didn't know why there were buoys right up against the wall to the east. Turns out they weren't right against the wall, and that was the channel. But I was cruising in over whatever was down there, and my depth gauge was showing a few feet, so I was ok. Probably had a few spectators on the wall wondering what I was doing in the skinny water with a sailboat, though.
