It is the same motor with a different rating, maybe different fuel mapping or cam, I don't know but it seems to me that you should buy a motor with more cubes over one with less. The Merc 50 and 60 have the same and I think are the same.
Yep, ain't no substitute for cubic inches!

My Suzuki 60 was rated at 85 pounds heavier than a Merc 50 Bigfoot. Also rated at 1300 cc versus about 1000 cc, 21 amps versus 14 amps, more reliable than carbs, definitely quieter, same fuel economy .... etc. After five years, have not seen any disadvantage to carrying the equivalent of a young teen at the transom, but lots of cruising advantages.

i am very pleased with my merc 60 bf. do keep in mind that she's only spun for little over an hour, so time will tell. i mounted a 14/13 prop and she pulls very well, although i still need to put a tach on her to ensure shes rotating at max.

the 60 has almost 1000 cc's - that's about 200 over the 50. quite a bit extra if it were on a bike.

i was thinking about that when we were out this week; my motorcycle has 1,100 cc's and my boat has 1,000. my bike is tiny and my boat is monolithic in comparison.

no wonder my bike flies.

. . but it don't float, though. it was under the tidal surge from Opal some years ago. :?
