Thank's for your replies, I think I should go for a well maintained Macgregor 26S. I agree that it would be cheaper to get one that is in good condition from the start. I have plenty of work to do on the foreclosed house we just bought.

I need to know what is the difference between the 26X and the 26M. I see a 26X for 13900 in sacramento ca. The cheapest one I've seen so far in the area.
It has a 50hp tohatsu, mast raising kit and new bottom paint. What do I need to look for that could be a problem.
Thanks.

The :macx: will plane slightly better (5% hull V), have a bigger cockpit and slightly more roomy potty. Usually costs less than an :macm: ($10+)

Usually has a white hull which tends to be far superior.

The :macm: will sail slightly better (15% hull V), bigger cabin and less roomy potty. Usually costs more than an :macx: ($19+)

Can have white, blue, black hull.

I sailed both and went for the :macx: because of the cabin layout. Yes the :macm: cabin is a bit larger, but I consider a bench opposite the head pretty useless, unless you're perverted  . The cabin layout of the :macx: is more practical for that matter. Plus: you can add the forward dinette seat to the front berth if needed. But as always, it's personal and many owners may disagree.

The bench across from the head is used as the cooler shelf on our :macm:

Thanks. I will go for the X, the one I found in Sacramento 1998 has a tohatsu 2 stroke and single axle trailer, the other one 2001 for 14500 has a suzuki four stroke and dual axle galv trailer. Much better buy I think.
Going for the best boat I can afford at the moment. :macx:

All other things being equal, that's the boat I would be more interested in. Tandem axles tows nicely, and since the original trailer was painted, it's newer. The 4-stroke is likely quieter.

But do look at the sails and rigging, along with the condition of the hull and boards.

Assuming it's all in good condition, that's a pretty decent price, IMO.

Oh, and make sure there are no title issues with either. I jumped through a lot of hoops because the PO was deceased, and DMV didn't know how to handle that. Well, two offices didn't know how to handle it, but on the advice of a boat broker I know, I went to another one, who told me it was no problem because there were two names on the documents without the word "and", so either one could sell them. I was out of there with all documents in order in five minutes. :D

It comes with a 2006 honda 15hp 4 stroke. everything is in ok condition, sure there is a few things that could be tinkered with. Thanks for your responses. We will start with this older one and maybe move to the X in a couple of years.

Went sailing yesterday to test the mac26s and it sailed great, I have no idea how to sail but it moved under wind power.
That's a start! 70 deg on the water in clearlake ca. little wind but great for learning the ins and outs of the 26S
Is the sail on a mac 24 the same size as the 26 S?
