If you are only going 10-12 inches I wouldn't have a concern and I know others have done it and haven't heard of anyone bending the mast doing it. The moment arm of only 10 inches or so is pretty short. I raised mine more since I also wanted the next size larger Johnson lever than what most use and it is longer yet and then added the toggles and such which added more length. I wanted new rigging anyway so moved the shrouds up also.

You can see the new location above. Also note that the old forestay is still there and I bring it back a wrap it on the mast.

I made a mounting location for it on the bow anchor rollers so that it can be attached inside of the new shroud. I have the old foresail on the boat at all times and it is a hank-on and it could go on the old forestay. I'd like to try and rig it sometime and run wing on wing running but haven't done it yet. I seem to forget about it when on the water  :( . I'd also thought about getting a small storm jib that I could run on that forestay but haven't and most-likely won't.

I raised the forestay and left the sides in place. I think I have sailed for 10 years like this.

I had given that some consideration...but since I was unsure, I left all of that in its stock position and just shortened the sail to match the new Johnson Lever hardware. So far, that has worked well...and I REALLY like being able to see under the foresail!
