The guy at West Marine told me it's the best stuff in the world for "non-skid" - So I assume he means the rough checkerboard surface on top of the deck - I tried some and it just seemed oily and greasy to me

What am I doing wrong??

Can someone tell me what "Woody Wax" is for?

Have you used NG2 on the antiskid. When I spoke with NG2 they said it may be applied without making the surface slick. I plan to power wash to remove as much oxidation as possible , hand scrub with a brush using soft scrub then apply NG2 with a short nap roller.

It was only a matter of time...

Boat, maybe you're using too much of it. Out of curiosity, I tried to figure out what all of the fuss was about (my co-workers would torture me without mercy for even looking at a product call 'woody wax'). Turns out that you're supposed to apply very little of the product and rinse most of it off.

As usual, your perception was on point. It is supposedly more like armor all, or other 'temporary' film/coating product. Supposed to make the deck easier to clean due to the film it leaves behind. Requires regular reapplication. People who use it regularly, swear by it. People who use too much just swear at it. Apparently, a common complaint is due to over-application leaving a "slippery mess".

Okay, so the point of "Woody Wax" is to help keep dirt off the non-skid. I can see that may be legit if you apply it lightly. I tried some of it on some normal fiberglass gelcoat inside the boat on the liner and then spent an hour cleaning the stuff off because it just left the gel coat a cloudy streaky oily mess no matter how much I tried to buff it out. It made me say: "What the hull is this stuff for anyways??"


So, do you guys put "Woody Wax" on your boats?? I'm not gonna do it if most of you guys don't do it.

How do you apply it? Is there prep involved? How much do you use? Where do you use it? WHY do you like it - what does it do that you like. How can we replicate your results?

Anybody have any info (other than rumor) about application temperature? Can't find anything on the bottle or on the internet.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the 3M restorer & wax myself. Not as young as I used to be.

Boats are a lot of work. We spent the last few days, first sanding boat sides with 1000 grit wet sandpaper, then using 3M rubbing compound and a buffer, and finally today finished up one side with 3M restorer and wax using a buffer. There is now some shine to one side of the boat. We tried a small area with the 3M marine ultra performance paste wax but got a better shine with the restorer and wax. Most likely because we have never done this. Maybe because there was still some oxidation, all I know is it looks a 1000% better now than 2 days ago. If I had not already bought the 3M months ago would have tried the New Glass or the Fleet wax if I could find some waxers. First time sanding, compounding, and waxing a boat so have no idea what is best. I haven't even waxed a vehicle in the last 25 years. That buffer has kicked my ah butt. Will be taking aleve tonight.

i just got my boat and have been researching the easy ways to maintain it. Newglass2 looked like the best out there. I dug a little deeper and guys were using ZEP wet look on gel coat. Don't know if it is the same polymer coating but looks very similar to the stuff being sold of polymer finishes for a fraction of the cost. I used the zep toilet cleaner (only on hull, stay away from metal) and it had done an amazing job to clean, as well did Bar Keepers Friend for around all my stainless etc. I will report back with the results but a gallon of Zep is like 30 bucks canadian. probably finish the boat 5 times over... my 2 cents.

I've been using generic 8"-10" bonnets. Are there better ones out there? Application - then buff?

I did the 3M repair and wax this spring with great results. Bought the 8-10" foam applicator pads (WAY better than using terry cloth as an applicator) but they tear very easily so buy extras, then terry cloth 8-10 for buffing. That stuff is supposed to remove oxidization and wax in one application and I was pretty happy. Wouldn't do it without the elec buffer though.
