Are you traveling the whole length of the Erie Canal, through to Lake Erie, then up the Welland into Lake Ontario? Or are you popping out in Oswego and traveling within Lake Ontario?

That's a long beat from Oswego to welland.
The ideal way to do this is to get someone to pick you up in Lewiston and trailer you to Tonawanda.
The Welland transit novelty wears off fast and is an all day view of very large ships rear ends.
