Yes I agree. For keel boats we only unstepped the mast to do work on them or for transport. Most times they were just stored over winter with the mast in place.

Indoor winter storage, for one. Lotta that in the marina I used to use, and the yacht clubs surrounding it. And/or a custom cover that requires the mast to be removed, to eliminate entry of water.

I think the original post is all "relative" based on ones usually personal experience and expectations.

I have a fishin' buddy that can't believe I go to all the work to hoist and rollout sails every time I want to move the boat forward ... and all that effort just to go 5 knots? Let alone stepping the mast a few times a year. (and all those ropes and pully things to figure out?)

He pushes his throttle forward with one finger and does 20 knots, and is home BBQ-ing the salmon long before our mast is down!

I never can understand the whole fisho mentality thing

Scream to the boat ramp as fast as you can, throw the boat in the water, drive away to park with foot hard to the floor.

Run back to your boat, Start your engine making sure you rev the crap out of it, take off down the channel doing at least 20knts in the 5knt zone, overtake anyone waving a fist at them if they dare to be doing anything less than 20knts

Clear the channel and open it up WOT to get to the fishing spot 30 seconds earlier

THEN - sit and so NOTHING for 3 hours waiting for that fish to bite,

Do the reverse when coming home, ensuring you jump the queue to load your boat at every opportunity

We did a lot of fishing off the Mac and it was always great when we pulled up, set anchor, dropped lines just like everyone else; then 20 min in my wife would bring up some hot cheesy dip and cold drinks (or hot if it was miserable) while we lounged in the cockpit, while most others sat in their seats in foul weather gear arms crossed looking angry. Made it even worse when we'd haul in a big catch

I had first-hand experience this summer what it is like to witness dozens of fishing boats that have a 200 horsepower or 250 horsepower outboard engine heading off at the start of a fish Derby in the early morning. I thought for a moment, that Canada was being invaded.

Guess I'll have to wait till after the election for that to happen.

Absolutely. Much like motorcycling, especially touring. If I wanted to get there fast, and not get wet in the rain, I'd buy a comfy Lexus and drive there. Or take a plane to get there really fast. But where's the fun in that?

The admiral comes from a power boat background, and gets bored with sailing. In fact, she still pokes fun at her dad's trawler, which had a displacement hull, and stayed below 8 kts. He's known for going slow, including (and especially) when driving.

Maybe it's time for a 115 hp upgrade, to 'get there fast'. But where's the fun in that?

OK, wakeboarding is fun. But that's a different subject.

Well I just joined I think the MYCBC , have not gotten my P/W yet !
Diff kinda Yacht club I do not foresee any downside with it , Terry is a member I,ve sailed with him great guy & he,s a member & speaks very highly of the club & it,s members as have all the other member,s I,ve talked too

Only downside is for u guy,s , U,ll have to move to BC like I did

I think I,ll be their 60th member so they r obviously doing something right

We are celebrating the clubs 25th anniversary this coming season with lots of extra special fun planned - so you joined at the right time. Best 35 bucks you'll spend on the boat this year, our gang really loves to enjoy all the things the MacGregor lifestyle has to offer - on and off the water. I might try make ur nov . meet , although the time line is very close , need to see whats avail for motels close by , would really like to meet up with terry again & his wife , never did get to meet her due to sailing conditions which made us late for a planned dinner arrangement which I am sure did not go down well due to all the work Terry,s wife must have went too !
