I think that's what Bill was talking about - I assume all the boats in the factory are already sold and I would not expect any more to be built.

Is there an other boat builder that makes similar Yachts like the MacGregor70? The design makes sense for me...

Well, yeah - but they were all built in the 1800's. It's a basic Schooner design. The Schooner and the Corvette were boats designed to go very very fast but still be able to weather circumnavigation although it was more common for a Corvette to travel with a fleet because they were really small (as small as the MAC65).

Long narrow boats are not a new thing - they are designated sleds and were pretty popular back in the old days.

Jboats sort of took over with their flat bottoms because people wanted to go faster than displacement hulls so with a planing Jboat you can go a lot faster if the wind is up, but your going to get beat to death.

The jboat is great and fast for a race where you don't mind getting pummelled below decks all day and night but if you want some comfort the long low narrow displacement hull is way better.

The Mac 65 was well ahead of its time in the performance/racing class. I believe it won many races.
It's a bare bones boat for any form of cruising. But it was lightning fast.
There are some even faster boats built since then. The custom 70 is interesting.

I haven't heard anything from Mike Inmon since making that video in 2013


There are many great boats in the 70' class being built. However the price tag gets large. The 26 foot class boats manufactured were an incredible value for the price.

This was the one I liked:




The one with the full keel and the engine under the pilothouse. The one before that had the engine in the aft and needed a gear box to get the shaft out the bottom creating stress on the packing.

The one I like in the picture has the Yanmar in the center down lower right under the pilothouse so it adds more balance to the ballast and completely frees up a full crew cabin in the aft section with it's own head and deck access. Or you had the option of having the rear crew stateroom converted to a toy garage for jet skies or dive equipment.

And then there was the pilothouse! Now that's the way to sail a long passage!

ok, good to know. So if I really should ever do the real big world around trip after retirement... I should look years in advance for a 65/70-foot-Mac.

the concept is fascinating. Just to go to an harbour/slip is expensive. But in most time I guess the big boat would stay at anchor and the big dinghi with big ob will bring you to shore...

What a project! It could be a good deal for a person who wants to spend some big bucks and end up with a cool boat. No the water ballast 70 is not in production.

bwy needs to consider a furling main boom for the MAC 26. It would need to include a bolt rope feeder for the mast.

People want a furler for the main. I think there is a way to engineer one similar to the boom basket on the 70.

I've actually been on that boat!

I helped the Dockmaster move it from a T-dock end slip in our marina down to to it's current location a little over a year ago.

It's in rough shape, but I bet if someone really wanted to sink the money into it could be a fast cruiser.
