Here,s a very good link on how to make ur own furler he used a 3" cap but u could go 5" or 6" cap for our boats bigger drum size means easier furling & reefing

Thanks, Highlander!

Lots of great info.

Put the mast up in the driveway and spent some quality time with my main Furler and my Genoa Furler.

Now the main goes all the way up without sticking near the top. In my younger days, I'd have been able to see the problem from the deck. The halyard was rigged wrong, such that the line raising the head was coming off the block toward the front of the mast, crossing under the other part of the line. It was obvious what the problem was when I could get a good look at it.

After I reversed the halyard setup, I had to move the block and cam cleat to the opposite side of the mast. This appears to be another setup mistake that came with the boat...

Raising the back end of the boom before furling was the trick to getting it to furl properly. Just had to go up 12-15" on the topping lift to get it to work.

The Genoa Furler is another matter. It's binding and dragging like crazy. I believe it has worn out. It looks like a very cheap unit.

Well, the Genoa Furler may be salvageable. I took a real hard look at it after I took the rig down and got it back in the garage.

Ray and dlandersson were on to at least a big part of the issue. The drum rotates inside of the black composite plates (holes in plate - no bushings/bearings, etc.), mounted above and below where the line wraps. The "bearing" surfaces were dry and dirty.
When I applied a side load, the drum would barely turn. Cleaned it with brake cleaner and sprayed it with dry lube, and it works much better - in the garage...

Also, the thrust load at the bottom is taken by two small stainless washers below the very irregular surface at the bottom of the drum. So, I made a thrust washer out of some scrap HDPE I had laying around, and slipped that in to improve the thrust bearing situation. I sprayed all of these sliding surfaces with dry Lube also.

Highlander's solution of a high quality Furler is probably the long term solution.

We'll see during the next outing... :)

U can always buy an after market unit
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000437 ... 26885532.2

likely cheaper in USA
nice thing about a furler with an external Halyard is u can ajust it while sailing & when furled u can ease off the halyard pressure which u should do to take off the tension on ur sail & u can,t do that with a CDI furler
