I too wonder if I should or could have settled for a motor half the size and the cost of what I got . In my case lack of experience was the problem. . . I too fell victim the BIG Motor syndrome .
Which would you have preferred, half the size or half the cost?
I believe they're mutually exclusive.
For me, the biggest advantage to the 50 HP engine is having the speed (power) when I want it. I tend to sail all day, pushing my time allowance to the edge. So I enjoy the fact that after a long day, I can wait till the last minute and then just zip back to port. The added speed also increases my cruising grounds, allowing me to go further out in less time before I start sailing. I have to admit the only reason I went with the larger engine was so the kids could water ski. Well that turn out to be a joke. I never could get the kids up, but never the less. The bigger engine is nice for the above mentioned reasons, plus it is nice to have when bucking a strong current and still having spare power should I need it.
