My situation PRECISELY. Wife never sailed, and I've been doing it since I was 7 or 8. She was a microbiologist from UM (Michigan), with an MBA from Darden School (UVA). But, once I got her out on the Mac and she has begun to like it a bit, though she's no where near the level of your Admirals - we simply haven't had that much time on the water. But this summer she and I will spend a week on the Mac, so they'll (hopefully) be time.

And likewise, before kids I was racing cars and going flying... no more.. sigh..........................

hey who knows a good Lawyer? Any way I believe the man overboard drill is never mastered by our other halves on purpose. That way when the insurance guy asks why they didnt go back for you they can say they dont know how to do the MOB or as they say today COB...

ARGONAUT thats the classic hubby hand book we were all issued, but Ill tell ya I have been known to lift a leg on a Mac trailer tire a time or two and that word TYRANT I learned at an early age from being called it so many times. Besides I have a theory about that stuff you mentioned.
You young guys take notes here. If your as nice as the hand book says
then latter in life the boat is to small the money doesnt go as far and
airplanes and fast cars are a thing of the past. They are all replaced by
Limos for proms, and words you never thought you would hear except from your sister or brother, that word is daddy.

This August my first mate and I will have been married 45 years. From the very beginning of our relationship I found it both a joy and very expedient to teach her what and why I was doing something, so she could do it also, sometimes even better... from firearms, to rebuiliding English sportscars, to construction, on and on but especially sailing. She prefers I helm the boat so she has less work to do, but I insist gently that she keep in practice for sailing, docking, maneuvering, and overboard drills. We ocassionally have difference of opinions, but she will eventually go ahead and let me make my mistakes.... and not laugh... because I'm always experimenting with something. It's the sharing of good and bad times, great sails and miserable ones, that keeps a crew and a marriage together I think. If only one person handles the boat all the time, makes all the decisions alone, not only can it be a safety issue, but boredom can set in. Interest wanes without some challenges once in awhile. I'm glad to see so many others have learned about sharing the repsonsibility, knowledge and joy of sailing.

I have the opposite problem. I have tried and tried to get Dawn to participate, but can only get her to take the helm, and that is only when I have to go up on deck for something. She absolutely refuses to trim sails or anything else. Well, I take that back. She is really good about pulling up the fenders and securing the docking lines when we leave the dock. Basically, she likes to come along for the ride, but wants me to do all the sailing stuff. I must say though, that she doesn't scare easily. She either really trusts me or just doesn't know any better. 40 deg heel, no probelm. I just hope I'm never a MOB. Hmm, perhaps I can use this to scare her into learning to operate the boat on her own. 8)

My Admiral says she's not confident enough to go solo yet, but our routine is pretty standard. I trailer and lauch, we rig together, I motor and maneuver in and out of the slip. But when the sails are up, it's pretty much her boat.

But that's OK...the view is great! 8) Image]

And we have an Admiral in training...Image

Delevi I call that the greyhound bus trip with Karen, She hates that.
But its leave the sailing to me and she goes for the ride. But last sunday
we went out and the wind died down and I just said its all yours, trim the sails
do what ever you want. I laid back in the cockpit and let her make all the moves. When she asked does the sail look right? I said what do you think.
and left it at that. It may have helped when I bought her a book a few weeks ago about sailing from a womans perspective, written by a woman.
I know she was reading it so maybe she just started putting things she read to use.

what ever it was I didnt do anything but take out of the harbor and bring it back in, she did the rest and loved it....

Hah!

I came out in the wrong place and changed course.

Sailing in the fog, without GPS, is fun. Gotta be careful and cautious, just like mariners did for millenia before us.

Give it a rest. Noone's on the planet long enough for it to be worthwhile to be a tyrant, mysoginist, or both.

Nah - wouldn't that be segregationist and exclusionary? :|
Besides, unless it was truly hidden, they wouldn't reveal their real perspectives!

Nice to meet you Karen ... & your sense of humor! :D

Although, after reading of that TYRANT, guess the sense of humor was already evident ... 8)

Perfect trim on a close reach with a mailsail reef. Surprised That is my kind of sailing.
Mark, that pic is when the wind was steady 20-25.

This pic is about 1 min later when a 30-35 mph gust hit and we were dumping wind as fast as you can say POP THE CLEATS!!

I just hope I'm never a MOB
The nice thing about a mac is for the most part as long as she can drop the sails and drop/ start the motor you maight get saved.

We went to the trouble of throwing the throwable PFD O/B and let her recover. It wasnt dead or unconscious cause I dont think she could get me back aboard with those little stick arms if I was limp

Scott I grow my finger nails and toe nails long these days as one day thats all that kept me from me overboard.
One of the first times out Karen at the wheel we were heading into the wind with me up by the mast fighting the main and boltrope trying to feed it in the slot. we did a 90 degree turn took a nice wave into the side of the boat and left me scrathing like a cartoon cat to stay on board. Inches from the water my first instinct was to yell what the hull are you doing,
the reply was a 180deg hard turn. I was flying like a flag. The situation was getting bad for me, with everything I had left I managed to pull my self up. And the first words from her was, " you shouldnt yell at me".
Knowing I wanted her to go with me again I said I was sorry. Then the next weekend I installed sail slugs and lines led aft. Come to think of it almost all the mods have been for the same reason. Auto pilot, genoa lines led aft, refridge stocked with lots of adult drinks.

I need a new dink engine, so next time we are in the dingy Ill yell at her
about how she rows...You guys that bought them (the suz 2.5) you like it?

Karen is a trooper though. I had her read this thread and she did come up with the Swen phone number thing. She was just kidding guys...I think

argonaut sometimes when we have no other talents (Bill Gates, Jonh Wayne) the only way left for some of us to leave their Mark in the world is
being a TYrant. But honestly most of this stuff is tongue firmly placed in cheek. If we cant laugh at ourselves then we dont see the humor in the rest of the world...besides Im like a pendulun Tyrant on one end and the sweetest nices guy in the world on the other. The next half of my life Ill try the other side of the pendulum.

Sorry frank or congrats...good looking guy like you shouldnt have any problems refilling that void.

night sailor you must have a girlfriend on the side right? I meen being as
content as you are.....but 45 years wow at the very least your one hull of a guy. your my guru from now on and the misses must be something special too.

I couldnt believe my ears !!!

We got to the lake and it was cloudy and the wind was Kickin' 9-13. Jennifer looks over the bluff and says "Alright, the wind is up we can have a fun sail."

We motored out had about 15 mins of decent wind and it died. Phhhhfft! ( fart noise)

Jennifer then says, to my suprise, " I was hoping that the wind would be up so we could have a sail like we did 2 weeks ago" (See pictures above)

What wow, this is a 180 from years gone by. Could it be that the love of my life will be liking adventure sailing. I couldnt have done a better job if I had her custom made at "Wife-R-Us"!!!!

The day wasnt a total loss though we had our social at the slab above the Marina last eve. Got drunk lied a lot and ate too much!!

Randy and DLT, you guys ought to make it out for a social this year. 2 X a month on Saturdays.
