Good point chip..in the winter at layup I dont cork mine..I dont like the idea of the ice block expanding either.

That string with knot trick is a nifty one though..

Good evening fellow Mac-ers. I agree with the reverse flush also, and to help keep it clear I purchaced one of those "universal" drain strainers. I think I got it at Ace or Publix,it is rubber app. 6" dia. with a screened "well" about 2" deep and 2" dia.. I cut a flat on it , so it can fit flush against the transom , and leave it up-side down{the well up} and it works quite well. Hope this helps......Happy Sailing.....Don

Ah, prevention. Everytime I'm out there with the hose, I'll aim the spray into the drain. Gotta keep up with it. Once cloged, though, I'll use the air hose.

Also, a 50:50 bleach solution once a month will keep the crud in check.

I find using a wet vac from the top sucks it clear every time. I have a small 1.5 gal wet vac I keep on the boat. It is a good size and I have found it has hundreds of uses on the boat. It realy makes quick work of removing the water that collects in the bilge over the winter. About 3 to 4 gal worth. Can't seem to find the source of the leak but it's the only time I have any water collect anywhere on the boat. I suspect that the tarp cover on the tposide must collect water and funnel it down into the bilge somehow because the two winters I did not cover the boat the bilge stayed perfictly dry but the two winters I covered it I ended up with 3 to 4 gal of fresh water in the bilge. :o

You guys are making this one way too complicated-- a toilet plunger works eveery time! I use it to drain excess water out of sink and bathroom through hulls as well.
