Well, I've got a 50 on my X and I've *never* been able to get mine out of the hole. It makes it to the second stage - Moe's 'exceeding hull speed' - but never gets over the hump.

Has *anyone* really got over that hump and planed with a 50? I've fiddled with more trim than a high-school quarterback and I still can't get that boat to lift up onto plane.

My 50 hp 26M at 16 knots is nowhere near getting out of the hole. I have a hard time believing any 26M is going to reach planing speed with 50 HP.

We would need a 150hp to get Run to Paradise (Choir boys) to plane this was never our intension we just needed some thing strong to push into heavy weather and charge the batteries

Well, I'll tell you one thing, I just launched my M last night, first time with the newly mounted Merc 75 4s EFI 1600cc 14x13 and she just jumped out of the water onto a plane and shot up to 30 mph in seconds. 8)

I was able to back off the trttl and hold 20 mph without the motor breaking a sweat and the db dropped significantly.

Could not be happier with the decision to go with the bigger motor, even if I can't tilt it all the way up without lifting the seat first. :D

Can't wait to get Highlander out for a spin this aft :)

Fantastic, Beene! Great speeds. Just curious, was the mast standing and do you have a roller furler? Any "junk" onboard? How many people onboard? (I might need to do a change out--or retune. )

Beene,

You describe the classic planing boat behavior we all wish we could get with our 50's.

Hi Billy

The Mast was in its crutch, ballast empty, 2 men, 2 kids, 5 gal fuel, 2 batts, way too many tools in the cabin as I am not done getting her all set up, all together I would guess 250 lbs of "junk" in the cabin.

My engine is the 2005 75/90/115 4S EFI model.
349lbs
1596cc
Exactly same spec as 90 other than rpm max 5500 vs 6500.
Can't remember about the 115 model, I think it was larger bore and stroke.

I was out yesterday, day 2 with the 75, mast up, same other conditions, lost 1.6 mph. I have not checked speed with gps yet, story there, but will very soon. I am averaging 28 mph mast up, semi flat water, 5 kts wind. I am at 500 ASL or so. I am finding I can get her up on plane real quick, 5-10 seconds maybe, then back off rpm and easily hold 20-22 mph.

I am looking forward to trying some water skiing.

I was hoping the 75 was big enough and I could not find a 90 for the same money at the time I bought, or I would have bought the 90 with the same spec.

I think Duane is right on the money with the new Honda 75/90 EFI 4S models. If I had the money and was in the market, I would go for the 90 Honda or the slightly heavier new Merc 90 model with more cc's than the Honda.

The 1600cc engine in my Merc seems to be responsible for the hole shot and ease at which she will push the waterbego around without breaking a sweat.
Beene,

I hear you Duane. I actually bought a Yamy 50 HT first, but it was stolen off the back of the truck before it got to me. So I started my search again for a good deal on a used motor and ended up finding my 75 at iboats.com for 3,299 US. I have since noticed several Merc 90's for similar money at the same place. One could get lucky and snag one of those. Mine was a lease back deal at the end of last season used on a bass boat in YVR.

I am one very happy Mac'r :)

Cheers

Nice video - I noticed that the back of your electronics had the wire connections exposed. From the mauals that I have read these are not waterproof maybe not even splash proof. Please check your manual. This could lead to problems latter.

I have been thinking about adding a spash guard or small windshield infront of the electonics to protect them and me from the spray and wind.

Anybody else done this?

beene, have you tried a speed reading with all the standing good up? I´m sure you loose a few MPH´s.
And what´s even more interesting: how much fuel do you use at 20-22MPH?

PS: funny to hear that squeaking noise from the wheel on your boat as well. I got my pedestal sealed with silicone - it got better since then....

it be interesting to find out the fuel consumption of the larger engine,
Petrol or gas as you chaps preferr to call it is now around £0.98 a liter, that equates to some where around $9.50 a gallon,so if the boats going along getting through gas at 5 miles to the gallon, well its $2.00 a mile for us in europe :(

Hi guys

The speed dropped even more once I put the main on and no cover for it yet. I think its catching air and slowing me down. I also have been always motoring with the Bimini up, it is set up so that it kind of tilts back when motoring, so again, it's catching air and slowing me down. I have not seen those high speeds since day 1 and 2. Also, I am always keeping 24 gal of fuel OB vs day 1 & 2 where I only had 5 gal total. It seems every little thing you add, slows her down. With her fully loaded, in sailing config, dirty as a 747 on slow approach due short rwy, I cruise at 20mph @ 3700 rpm and can't seem to break 22-24 mph tops.

As for gas mileage, I have not figured it out yet. I am going on a big trip, 4 days if you call that big, big for us anyhow as it will be the first ever multi night trip on our new M. I will be able to take some numbers during that trip and will post my results upon my safe return.

Cheers

Now that's an interesting point. I've always got my main on the boom. I wonder if I could finally break 17mph if I would just put the thing down below.

This is for displacement speeds only, ie 7.4 mph and below.
1. Averaged over the summers of 2001-2005 at South Haven MI, Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke with 7 pitch prop on my 2001 X weighing about 4500# with crew, in conditions ranging from a few short WOT 7+mph dashes and frequent idling while waiting for the bridge to lift and lots of motoring at 3-6mph, average mpg almost 10.
2. Averaged over 2 months in late summer 2006 at Holland MI, same set up, except no bridge in the way and a new Honda 9.9 4stroke with 6.5 pitch 4 blade prop, 138 miles motored per gps , 12.1 gallons of gas used per tank depth measuring stick and gas dock pump meter, average 11.4 mpg.
In 1. and 2. above, motoring is primarily from slip to Lake Michigan and until main is up, and while getting sails down and returning to slip, with occaisional motoring to anchor off beach for a swim, ie no motoring trips.
Re 2, due to E10 gas gumming up the Evinrude carb several times with resultant strandings and $$ carb rebuilds, I run the Honda carb dry upon return to the slip, so without that its mpg would be slightly higher than 11.4.
Thus, for strictly displacement speeds operation, with carb'd 4 stroke motors, I am satisfied that a 9.9 should give more range per gallon than a much larger eg 50 hp motor, tho I would guess a large injected 4 stroke would do as well or better than the carb'd 9.9.

It's worth a try deja_vu.

My initial top speeds were with 2 adults 2 kids, 5 gal gas, mast down, then up but nil main and boom and the Bim was down also.

My M is home is prep for that big trip, I am adding some big headers out the back for effect......

... just kidding.
