and if you drop your sail stop into the drink,
The one I have has a small washer with line attached to it. The line is tied to a mast cleat, so if the stopper pops out, it's not going anywhere.

After dropping a couple slug stoppers into Davy Jone's locker, I now tie mine on with a lanyard.
On another thread someone suggested drilling a small hole through the mast going through both sides of the track at the point where you would put the sail stop and putting a cotter pin through there once the slugs have all been inserted into the track. I have not tried this but it sounds like a great idea, and would certainly alleviate the problem I have had, and save a few bucks in the process.
This actually works great. I was just sailing on my old Mac 25 and we had drilled through the mast track and put in a removable Ace Hardware pin. It's quick and doesn't slip.

Real windy yesterday on Angostura in South Dakota. I did a jibe on the Mac 25 and something didn't sound right. I looked at the sail and the top slugs had broken (they were plastic). I told my friend who now owns the boat to drop the sail now. Fortunately the sail was not damaged.

My slug stopper is a quick wrap around the mast with a piece of electrical tape.

Works great! :D

I like the pin idea especially for reefing, I do have the plastic sleeve which allows the slugs to drop lower but it moves and becomes cumbersome sometimes, the pin through it and the mast should solve several problems (or create more :) )
This board is a great source of ideas even if not used as intended.
