I think the one thing we can safely say is that Roger is no dummy; his degree is in business after all.

It's a supply and demand thing.

Normally you would advertize in order to increase demand and sell more boats. Increase supply to meet the increased demand and increase profits.

If he is truly prevented from increasing production for whatever reason, then it seems the only reason to advertize would be to drive an increase in demand with a fixed supply and thereby justify a price increase.

I think if he were serious about a desire to increase production, Roger could overcome the obstacles. If CARB is the problem, I'm sure there are ways to reduce the emissions per boat in oder to permit a production increase. It just costs money.

Absolutely agree Chip, except Roger is not one to normally listen to many of his dealers NOR his customers. He does what he wants.

Rick is right.

The factory for the most part is not very user friendly. It is a very strange operation and there is not much of a "relationship" between them and the dealer.

There is very little communication with them other than when you are ordering, paying and in our case, picking up boats.

They could easily overcome the environmental issues by setting up a second shop in Mexico but that's not in the cards.

I was in San Diego on business a few months ago and met up with one of my drivers who was picking up a load of boats. I was late and we didn't get to the fatory until later that evening. No boats were being built but the building where they assemble the cushions was up and running.

It's been some time since I've viewed or posted but I thought this was an interesting thread!

MacGregor ads in Sail Magazine are not some new phenomenon. In fact when I became interested in sailing, it was the postage size ad for the MacGregor 26x in the classified section that convinced me that I could aford to take up sailing.

I will not make any atempt to read into why MacGregor has decided to run ads again, but believe that it will draw new sailors into the sport and will increase demand for Mac's!

I have a theory on why they ran the ad.

It may be in response to five new trailerable sailboats that are scheduled to be introduced at the Seattle Boat Show in late January. They range in size from 21' to 28'.

My thoughts likewise.
When I was in the market for a sail boat, 20 -30', a few years back, I had no knowledge about a MacGregor, especially the water ballast, trailerability, shallow water adaptability, -- and much more. I found a Mac 26S (in excellent shape) when walking through Marinas, boat yards, etc. I found the right boat, right price, and have since sold it for a Mac X. I wouldnt want another boat design (other than eventually an M), at this time.

My finding a MacGregor was entirely accidental...I think the Sail Mag ad will pay off big time for Roger because the " trailerable" fits so many hard working budgeted small family needs. (if only Roger doesnt get greedy and price himself out of the small family market).
When the price tag gets around that $35-$40K range, small family affordability becomes an issue.
The best priced boats today in my opinion are the older Macs, D, S, and X series (for trailerables).

:macm: I was also suprised to see the ad last night when I picked up the latest issue. My thought is that Roger is anticipating a slow down in orders with the economy slowing and is attempting to maintain a production level that provides the highest efficiency. If he truely is limited by the state in his production volume, increasing demand will allow him to raise the price and garner the highest possible profit from each unit sold. Either way, it sounds like a smart business move to me.

Got my issue yesterday and saw the ad. There's Mike Inmon sailing again (when does that guy work?)!

I will try to figure out the WHY when I am in MDR sailing this weekend and I'll be back Monday sometime to tell ya :P

Just received my Sail Mag yesterday. Great Stuff in this issue.

Anyone see the interesting article of the gal taking off a few years to circumnavigate in a Flicka 20' boat, alone. :| ...claims she is out to see the world. (article on page eighteen)
