Bruce,
I have been reading and studying up as much as I can in preparation for the trip. This will be our first large trip and in preparation my wife and I are taking as many overnight trips as possible, sleeping on the boat, and praticeing our sailing skills. You commented that you should have listened to the ranger, can you give me some details? I can't wait for the trip and plan on making several day/weekend trips from Oxnard to Anacapa island, perhaps we could sail together before the big trip?
Regards
Rich

Hi guys, I wish that I could go along with you but I don't think I can make this one. It really sounds like a lot of fun though. I have to go to Norfolk VA for a Navy reunion at that time. I haven't seen these guys in 30 years so I would kind of hate to miss that. But I will follow on the board and see how things go with you all. That other trip in a couple of years sounds pretty interesting if you guys pull it off. The one to Florida. I sure do wish that I could go though. Good Luck, and I will monitor your adventures.

I'm glad to see that there is still so much interest and a good list of boats planning to be there.
I'm would be all for a spring metting if you guys would like. My experience in group trips is limited to 1 Channel Island Trip and 1 Ensenada Trip. In both cases it was a kind of informal who-ever-shows-up-goes kind thing. Both trips worked out surprizingly well. By that I guess I meaning everyone showed up were they were suppose to and on time, got along well, worked together, no problems, etc. Not always what you might expect when you join a bunch of people that really don't know each other. However a little planning is always a good idea. April-Mayish at some central location say between San Diego and Santa Barbara like Long Beach perhaps?
Francis....I'm really bummed to hear you two won't be able to make it this year. Maybe if you can get some time later in the summer we can do a few days at Catalina or something.

Thanks Dave, that sounds good. I will have to see if I can work that out. Not sure though, but who knows. I'll keep a good thought on it.
You guys are making me drool all over myself with thoughts of how much fun this trip will be. Unfortunately, I will not be able to join any of these ventures yet, as I'm a long ways from having both the boat, and experience.
I DID manage a trip with friend on a Jenson Marine Cal 30 around 1997 I think it was, from the Channel Island Harbor, out to Ana Capa Island and back.
Here's a shot of Channel Island Harbor from a couple miles out. Being the novices we are, we were already motoring back in.

I think a Apr/May meeting would be great but why not come up a little farther? Pismo?... Morro Bay?
Well, where ever. Would it be a meeting at some fine restruant? We could get a seperate dinning room and dinner and party and plan.
(I don't think Denny's does private rooms)

Roy, I see that you are on the central coat but where exactly from. We live in Bakersfield and have a house in Shell beach and sail out of Avila and Morro Bay quite a bit. If the wether holds, we are planning on staying the weekend in Morro bay and getting a slip.
It would be fun to meet up with a fellow Mac sailor one of these days.

I know the topic of dingy towing has been covered in the past in seperate threads, but I wanted to pose the question here more specifically for this loop-trip. Is anyone planning on towing an inflatable dingy on this trip? I have a achilies 8ft with a 5hp outboard and plan on bringing it with us. It would be interesting for me to get feedback from those of you planning on going on the trip.
Thanks
Rich

What to do with a dingy is always always a tough one. At least with a Mac. So I'm not sure of how good an answer I can give. Currently all I have is the cheapie Seahawk inflatable that I bought a year or two ago. It's the inflate and paddle hard kind. However I may have something better by then.
I think it's basically up to you. You can keep it inflated and drag it if you'd like. It may mean more motoring if you fall behind sailing or something like that. But then that's what a Mac is all about. I think that there will be a few days where you will get little use of it and it's a burden to tote around. Then there will be other days you will be really glad you have it. and if I need a lift, I will be too!
Personally I've never towed one so I'm not sure how much it messes up your sailing. I'd imagine quite a bit at times. So when I do by something I think it'll be something I can stow away reasonable well with a small light motor. Just a shore boat basically.

Rich,
I have posted this before but I am one that tows my dingy alot. I tie it off on the port rear stanchion and tow it just aft of the stern wave. I like it there as its easy to keep an eye on and I can quickly get it up along side when in tight quarters, or tying up, like in Two Harbors...right BK!!!. I tow it around the channel islands as there is interesting things ashore on each island and definately needed on Catalina..I think the shore boat was 4 bucks each way.
My wife appreciates it back there as our plan B if something happens. I have a 9.5 foot inflatible with a honda 2hp hanging on the back. I have carried it below and the motor is only like 22 lbs, and stores easily under the dinette. the pain is inflation and insertion of the floorboards on the cramped deck. Easy on and off out the transom, makes for many trips to explore or vist others at anchor.
I had a towing bridle made by an outfit that sells jacklines and PWC towing straps on Ebay. Like 8 bucks including shipping got a nylon webbing with 6 foot arms and I added a fish float and a stainless 2 inch ring to snap on my floating tow line.

Thanks Steve
We will plan on towing ours as well. With a 6 and 7 year old on the boat, I always tell them that if they don't behave I will put them out in dingy!
These Ca storms are killing me! I have been wanting to take the boat out, but the weather has been ugly....I am having a hard time waiting until July for the BIG TRIP.

Rich and Lori,
Sorry it took so long to respond to your question about Scorpion Harbor at Santa Cruz.
The ranger recommended Smuggler's cove on the other side of the island. I would also recommend two anchors to keep you pointed into the waves. At Scorpion we rocked and rolled so much I thought we were the Beatles. I put the keel down, and it helped a lot, but it banged around so much I thought it was going to fall off. So I would pull it up, then put it down a little, then back up.
Here's what I would do.
(1) Smugglers Cove vice Scorpion, especially if NW wind is blowing.
(2) Devise a rocker stopper flopper of some sort. I've been toying with the idea of a plastic bucket with holes punched in the bottom at the end of the boom at 90 degrees.
(3) Two anchors to keepyou pointed into the predominant direction of the swell. We had swell all night long yet the wind was coming down from the valley and we were broad sided by the swell all night.
(4) Seriously consider camping on the island. It was fun on the boat, but it just rocked and rolled too much.
Hope it helps.

I was at Minny's yesterday and he was selling Faigin's Cruising Guide from SF to the Mexican Border for Three dollars ($3.00). This book is usually $25 which is what I paid. He had about 4 cases of them. I could pick them up and give to Dave and get re-imbursed that way if anyone wants one. Let me know soon as I don't know how long they will last at this price.
