while i have experienced P-factor on a little cub airplane i had which swung a six foot prop, my little 12"x9" prop on my little 50hp nissan goes straight as an arrow both forward and aft.If there is any sort of walking sideways it is so imperceptable that it is beyond my sense of awareness with or without acholhol enhancement.

Has anyone done this on an ? I have the BWY disconnect for my 2002 but no idea how this is supposed to go on. If anyone has instructions or possibly pictures of their X setup can you post them ?

Jim, great post and video on the steering quick disconnect.
I saw that too on facebook and was considering it. As you know I do have a 26M with the Evinrude Etec 60hp so I hope there wont be any problems as Brian suggests.
Lets see some pictures of your spinnaker mod. I'm strongly considering a Doyle UPS (Utility Power Sail) 200-220 sq ft made by JSI in St. Petersburg, FL.

Good to see you back in MD. Seems like everytime I check in on FB you are in some exciting location around the world...ahh the life of an airline pilot...

König is sitting in my driveway in Manassas. The mast is off and hanging from my fence. Still cleaning and modding...plan to work on it all weekend. Spinnaker mod is progressing.

Spinnaker is from JudyBSails who is an advertiser and member of this forum. I believe is ~310 sq ft.



Can't wait to fly it.

Should be on the water the last weekend of March.

I have the 97X and my steering cable is located next to control cables and is 90 degrees off the motor . I also have a U shape arm that clears the engine in full tilt.
The quick release arm is same as you photo.
Wonder why they would lead control cables forward and not like mine running along side steering bracket on Starboard side. Mine has worked great.
On the M I wonder why they projected the steering tube inside of the boat were water can get in instead of the outside arm, and the latter works great for me.

Hmm...

Looking at these pics I can see right off the holding pin for the quick release would be in the perfect position to be smack in the way of my raymarine rudder sensor for my autopilot... I either have to figure out if it can be mounted on the opposite side or I have to move my rudder sensor somewhere else. Argh. Always one more thing to do to get the one thing I want done, done.

That and does anyone else have issues getting a signature to auto-attach here ?

Dave, Mine is a Blue Water Yachts boat and their explanation for the control cable installation was: It is simpler, less invasive to the boat and helps to prevent water ingress.

Keel_Hauled (is that a first, or last name?), The motor control rod is simply clamped onto the curved arm that connects the rudders, so you can clamp it on the port side if you wish.

Auto attach of signatures are disabled on this board, as Heath considered some of them to be offensive, so they all had to go.

Thanks for letting me know about that option for the quick disconnect; I wasn't sure if there was some engineering reason for having it on the starboard as opposed to port (stress on steering, etc) so that's good to know. I'll be installing a platform over all that anyway as I have had some careless gas tank thief step on the rudder sensor and break it off before...

"Keel_Hauled" could be first or last name, not really sure how to apply it- it's the first alias that popped into my head when I signed up. This is likely due to just how hard is is to get a divorce in Florida without getting KEEL_HAULED(2 yrs and 3 months in and still no divorce)... I try not to use my name online for just that reason but I have hopes that one day soon I can actually step into the valley of the real again without fear of cyberstalking...

Has anyone had a BWY engine quick disconnect come lose under power? I just re-powered to an ETEC 90 and the dealer is worried that the quick disconnect might come loose under power. I see his point and agree that it could really ruin your day if either end popped off under power, but like the idea of being able to un-hook the motor when under sail.

I have this upgrade and it's great. According to Macgregor, there's very little difference between the steering with or without the motor connected. This just isn't true with the size outboards used today. My Honda BFP60 puts quite a load on the steering when tilted and connected. After disconnecting, you can actually "feel" the water on the helm instead of the aluminum beast falling to leward.

As for disconnecting under power, it seems quite unlikely. The disconnect consists of a ball joint on the motor steering connection, another on the new steering arm supplied with the kit and a third on a stainless bracket to "park" the engine when disconnected. The steering rod is held to each ball by a stainless collar that slides over the joint. It takes a pretty deliberate action to move it. Assuming it did come loose, I would not expect the boat to fly out of control as the engine isn't really trying to turn itself. In fact, I often disconnect at low speed in gear before I put the sails up. One hand on the disconnect and the other on the motor to align it with the "parking" bracket.

I can post pics of the setup if you'd like.

We have the bwy connect on our Suzuki 70 and it is solid. There shouldn't be that much pressure on the linkage no matter what you use. It should take very little force to turn it.

Tilting is another story. I always disconnect from steering when tilting. Again, this is true with or without the bwy linkage.
