I agree with Catigale, I've used JB Weld on other applications and has worked well. Main thing is to mix JB Weld correctly and have a clean surface. I use acetone or Lacqer thinner to clean parts first. If the part being repaired is in a high stress area JB Weld may not work. For the price of even a used lower unit, I sure would try it. Not leaking oil is great, maybe PO hit something and the crack is not cause by a defect. Epoxies have come a long way and widely used now.

I agree about the JB Weld. I use JB Weld Industrial and like the job it does. My ex-wife had broken about 2/3 of the skeg off the lower unit; I made a new one out of thin metal screen and JB Weld Industrial rather than go the 'weld a new one on' route. Worked great and you can't tell that a repair was ever done. It may not break if I hit something, though, but I never go that fast and certainly not in shallow water
