Exactly on a fractional rig when you tighten up the back stay it bends the mast and flattens out the main sail to de-power it. it does tighten up the fore stay some also. On a mast heat rig tightening up the back stay will just tighten the fore stay you will not have as much control of mast bend.

As for where to fly the Asymmetrical spinnaker I wold not fly it from the top unless you only do it in light wind conditions or convert to mast head. My 26s had a hole drilled in the mast about half way between the uppers and the top. Instead of drilling a new hole I chose to use that one for my asymmetrical spinnaker block. I have been knocked down before in 20kts of wind and everything held up fine. I fly my spin from that block and from a 2ft bow sprit. That gives me around a 12.3 ft J and a 25.4 ft I for a 28 ft Luff. I am going to have a full spinnaker made with those measurements and I imagine it will need to be taken down as soon as white caps show up. My spinnaker I have now is about 5 ft short.

Grady do you have a picture of your bowsprit you can post or email me? I think I may have a bit of a problem mounting one on my 26D. A PO anchor thing mod... is in the way.
I'm looking for some type of solution working around the mod. Or I have a big hole to patch.

I like this topic as it adds pszazz to the 26D folklore and Macs in general. Sorry to be bragging, but 82 skippers entering the Long Distance Race at Havasu 2013 were just beaten by a 26D, mine. I also won the Manufacturer's Cup if just counting monohulls, since I was second to a F-27 and the race was not handicapped and I beat him in the first race, I felt great about the race also.

The 26D I match raced against last year was replaced by the F-27 this year. The owner invited me to race in Idaho against a local with a fast D there. Can't wait, but my wife has interfering plans perhaps.

I love checking out this site and seeing this thread. Makes me smile.

It's a darn fact, Windancer is a rocket. However, when the wife retires we plan to trailer the X all over the USA behind the RV so perhaps we could do some X racing, sailing and sight-seeing in your waters.

I looked and didn't find. I have the stock trailer and don't think I could add a bowsprit without adding length to the trailer tongue, but would like to see what you have done.

The bow sprit sticks out the same distance as the hitch. I do have to be careful on steep boat ramps. luckily I live in texas with shallow ramps.

The Harpoon appears to be a rare classic boat. I'm sure it would kick butt on the X, but the D? Apparently, there are only 150 of them out there?

So you are a 2 boat owner like some of us.

I spent this weekend sailing with some friends of mine that have a water ballasted 1989 D.......they can clearly sail faster on any point of sail than my M.....I have about 5 years experience on my boat and he has only 6 months of any sailing experience at all on his.

Both boats are beachable....as we demonstrated this weekend.

His has a proper sailboat round bottom, mine has the "powersailor" bottom with transom.

I have more headroom, and 44 more horses that are attached to 2 synchronized rudders and can be trimmed from the helm.

His 6 h.p. engine can't turn with his rudder, cant be trimmed without fiddling at the engine, and is throttled seperately from the tiller.

His has a lazarrette that mine doesnt have.

His has a lower freeboard (less headroom but probably better to point with).

I have an anchor locker and bow roller that he doesn't have.

As far as other aspects, both boats are great for getting out on the water with family, spending the night, and having an amazing time sailing or tucked into a cove, but the 26D clearly has an edge on a 26M when sailing IMO.....and thats ok with me, he was willing to come back for me when under sail and I came back for him when under power
