Stern of the boat ... isn't there supposed to be foam in there?

Ah Ha lol the keel wobble is real common and you will see a ton of repairs on them here is a picture of my solution it works really good

what I did is bring the new pivot pin into a really good hardware store it specializes in hard to find nuts and bolts (B&B Fasteners) I love the guys little local store. Anyway I found a socket that fit the rounded out hole almost perfect and showed them the Pin and the Socket and I said "I need a bushing this pin can go in and will fill a void the size of this socket" and the guy pulled out some drawers and looked and tried and tested and said how about this? I said its to short he said use two I said OK. anyway i had to cut 1 down a little with a angle grinder and I carefully siliconed them into the void and then climbed under the boat with the board and dropped the hanger on my head LOL Many people use copper pipe some PVC again you will have to find a solution and then repair and replace the board. OH and Make sure that the wire is not your Keel retraction Cable and inspect all that stuff too When you go to put the boat on the trailer after sailing you dont want it to drop by failure.

Ah ... so you just glued in some bushings. Good idea.

Is it a steel or iron casting ... didn't check? Well, either material, I can ream it out and fab a bushing from some beryllium bronze stock I have on hand.

Well, that's good that is a common problem. Thanks for the picture ...

What are the two piece on the left? Is that the dreaded hanger you were talking about? ;)

you have to remember we have very different boats with some similar systems my boat uses a fiberglass board because it has a water ballast system and don't need a fixed weight. here is the sales video Motorsailors are really cool boats -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jNkkz8Xop0

Yea ... I know. But you did have a 22' ... Mac or Venture?

Yes there was originally buoyancy foam under the cockpit and also in the v-berth.

Ormonddude-How did you support and lower the keel while it was on the trailer so that you could remove the pivot boat?

I have an 85 Mac 22 and my keel cable broke. Can I replace this with line instead of cable?

You could but why, unless its an emergency repair. SS cable is cheap ... and new cable is only $31 and change at Blue Water Yachts

Amazingly Amsteel rope is stronger than steel cable and much easier on hardware as far as abrasion its not cheap but not that expensive either about a buck a foot give or take now it does have a lot of stretch so not good for things like stays but certainly could replace a winch cable

I'm not an expert on these boats but I believe steel encased in FG was how they were built. You might have a cast iron replacement...YAY!!


Classic failure for the steel FG keels is water intrusion, steel rusts, expands, swells keel into trunk , no longer drops or even breaks trunk..... :| :| :|

What about abrasion to the line itself? Doesn't the cable attach to the side of the keel?

This stuff sounds like the Spectra line I used to use on my stunt kites ...

My 1984 Mac 22 has a cast-iron keel. I *think* it is original.

BMXER, in your pic/diagram, hole #1 is to gain access to the bolt that attaches the bulkhead brace to the keel trunk (see picture). The small hole, #2, is how the factory put the fastener in to hold the rubber keel bumper in (probably a #10 screw, so the hole was only big enough for a screwdriver to fit in). The dreaded, fiberglass encased keels were only on the pre-1973 boats, so yours should be all cast iron. The keel setup is basically the same on the 22's, 23's,24's and 25's (the keels are different weights and shapes though) and nothing like the 26's.

Was it a solid block? How was it contained? I'd like to put it back in ... Commencement Bay has some deep water ... 300 foot depth average to 500 feet in spots. If it goes down, it stays down ...
