Wow Matt! That's one A W E S O M E boat!!! Congratulations. It's the Swiss army knife of the Beneteau world, very flexible and adaptable to changing needs. (Or should I call them “wants”
).
You are going to have a BLAST on that when the wind picks up
Jealous over here!!!

Thanks man! Despite how excited I am about the new boat, I do feel ambivalent about giving up the MacGregor. We'll have to cancel a number of "idea stage" plans we had like going to Tahoe and Lake Mead, and doing the Florida Keys. I may just keep it another year and get these trips under my belt before selling it; It's not like it's going to lose any significant value between now and then. Heck it might even become more valuable if the Tattoo production doesn't keep up with demand.seahouse wrote:Wow Matt! That's one A W E S O M E boat!!! Congratulations. I'm mostly saddened by the inevitable drift away from this awesome forum. There's nothing even remotely close in the beneteau forums world, which seems to be populated mostly by armchair admirals and marina queens worried more about A/C than capabilities.
Upgradeability is exactly why I wanted this particular boat. We'll be using it immediately as a day sailor and weekender doing perhaps two-week trips as far afield as the Channel Islands and Santa Barbara with the kids. When they're out of the house, I'll upgrade it to a cruiser by putting in the bulkhead and fitting an aft arch, solar, a watermaker, radar, and dinghy davits and a dodger, and we'll take the aft berths out to make room for provisions along with additional tankage for fuel. When I retire, It's big enough to attempt a circumnavigation with my brother.
So hopefully it's a boat that'll last me the next 40 years, 'till I'm lost at sea.

Re: Well, that escalated really rapidly...
So I just found out I'm getting Hull #3. #1 was premiered in Europe, #2 at the Annapolis boat show, and this is the first one on the West Coast.
Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

They say that good things come in three's. The owner of hull number four is the one who should worry

Re: Well, that escalated really rapidly...
My neighbour (who has a Beneteau, his third 34') said he saw one at Annapolis, which must have been #2.
I will say that I believe that you will find (or maybe you have already) it way easier to sail than the Mac, particularly in higher-wind conditions. We had a blast on his boat Sunday with 19 kt winds.

Does the 38 come in three models? I think there is a cruiser, and two others, is that right?
