So I bought one of these cameras. It's USB powered and claims to use 2-4 watts which my 100w solar panel should be able to supply.

I repurposed an old cell phone with a pay-as-you-go data plan and the WiFi switch (above) is pretty cool. So I will have video surveillance and be able to turn the fridge on before I head to the marina and have it cold when I get there. Hopefully the camera (if pointed correctly) can show me storms that are hitting the boat.

The camera is pretty cool and has some really nifty features for a $36 camera. I've been testing it at home and it works really well.

Has anybody used the apple air tags or Samsung tags as a GPS tracker? If stalkers are using it to track their victims then I'm sure it can be used to track a boat as well. Lol

I'm not familiar with Samsung. The Apple Air Tags are kind of cool and creepy at the same time. They seem to depend on apple devices nearby to report location. If ANOTHER Apple device sees the tag, it phones home reporting location. Or at least that's my understanding.

I'm mostly curious about the status of my boat after a big T-storm blows by. In the past, sections of dock have broken apart.

I just ordered a WiFi 12v voltage monitor. Hopes are that I can remotely control and monitor how my solar is holding up when I'm away.

Just my 2 cents….
It goes back to uses and misuse of tools.
While the paranoid crowd worries about potential misuse of Apple Tags and the like, there is the major benefit aspect of your being able to find your stuff if it goes AWOL.
There have been many many many more instances where the ability to find and recover AWOL items that would have otherwise remained AWOL.
This applies to pets too! There are several pet tracking tags, similar to the Apple Tags, but have a smaller “finder” population to help recover a lost pet.

So what to do?
Maybe make the criminal penalty for stalking, especially with electronic devices, a significant penalty that substantially impacts the stalker… say a mandatory 30 days of incarceration… and then add in some substantial mandatory financial penalties.

Personally, the benefits seem to far outweigh the risk for the normal non-stalker product users.

Just an opinion….

I don't know about the Apple tags, but the Tile tags have saved us multiple times. My wife has one attached to her electric shears, purse, and car keys. She has a bad habit of putting the shears down while she's working in the yard and forgetting where they were. We've tracked them down more than once. I found her car keys in the outside garbage can using the Tile (just before the garbage was picked up). You don't want to know what a new key and remote for a Jaguar costs . That one alone covered the cost of all of the tiles!

Sounds like the tags would be a cheap option to keep a tab on your boat.

(Ok,full disclosure. I want to strap it to my turtle and broadcast online 24/7, or at least on demand. )

THIS is a wired device. WYZE does have a battery-operated version.
As for broadcast?

In my testing...the default is that it's idle until either it detects motion or the app requests it go live. It can be set to record full time to a microSD card.

The quality of the image is pretty good. It has a nice magnetic mount and is pretty easy to configure. Right now, I have it on my home WiFi. Next test to to pair it to my cell phone hotspot and see how it works there.

It just might be a ninja and move slow enough to avoid tripping the motion detect feature!
Personally we’d love to see the world perspective of a turtle!
(After all that has been going on in the world as of late a turtles view point would be welcome!)

I must say the audio on that cam is very poor compared to my reolink I can live view on mine & listen to every word cleary of anyone talkin on my dock over 100 ft away in the summer aft,s when the ladie,s have their cocktail hr on the docks I,ve heard some embarrassing discussions for them if they knew I,d heard what they were talkin about lol women r 10 times worse than men when it comes down to dirty talk , not that I,m peakin or eve dropping just that when they walk past my boat to go swimming & trip my cam on I get some interesting video & audio my cam motion setting is set to a longer distance than my infer red alarm setting I turned down the sensitivity of it so as u pretty much have to put an arm or hand inside my enclosure to set off the alarm as I don,t want the alarm going off every time someone walks past my boat just need the cam turnin on & lets me know if someones checkin out my boat & if they trigger it more than couple times I turn on the speak function & say hello can I help U & I,ll hear something like OMG theirs someone in the boat .
But for the price point u r getting what u really want good video & live view capability I luv the mike feature when my neighbors bring friends down onto my dock & trip my cam & I check it out & turn on the mic say "by the way their,s nothing on this boat worth dying for" the response is usually Holy Sh_t did U hear that ! & then my neighbors laughing knowingly having set them up
Reolink has a Pan & tilt on sale this wk so I broke down & open the piggy bank & bought this unit Reolink Argus PTSP wireless the PT stands for pan/tilt & SP stands for solar panel FYI Reolink has the same cam on sale for the same price minus the solar panel & amazon price for same thing I bought & was $50 more Best Buy had the best deal going so it pays to take the time to shop around , why well I can walk to my boat from the condo in 2 mins as the marina belongs to the condo complex two building on our property but I don,t have a water front view but my condo fees & property taxes r half what they pay also water front view condo,s cost 35% more to buy , so if I mount this cam half way up my mast or on my radar arch I will have actually more water front view than them as I will b able pan & tilt the whole water front from the comfort of my recliner for the cost of the camera as it will use the same old cell ph & data plan the other cam is using .
So Russ after reviewing my reolink eco cam on the Reolink site audio is very good so then I went onto youtube & watched other reviews of my reolink eco cam & found that the audio was just as bad as ur,s , so I have come to the conclusion that when these vids r uploaded onto u-tube that in the process theirs a lot of the audio quality being lost , so now I,m very interested to find out in reality if ur cam audio is just as good as my cam & I,m sure this could b very useful info for the rest of our members , the reason I went with Reolink is because about a dozen of my neighbors bought cheaper Chinese knock offs that only lasted 1 yr or less with half the features , so this could b an interesting insight for the rest of the members who r thinking of going down this road !.
FYI this new cam I just bought is also avail. in wireless 4G LTE mode so u just buy a sim card with data & install it in the cam & it eliminates the need for a cell ph as it becomes its own hotspot pretty neat but at 2 1/2 times the cost of the cam I just bought I,ll pass for now

Nice review on the cameras.

Buddy of mine leaves his super big screen to a 24 hr every day live stream camera and sound from a Caribbean Beach Bar window with a sunset view!!!
I think his view has got the dibs on best water front view!!!

All my buddy needs is a window frame and he’s set for MaiTais, Pina Coladas or Mojitos any time he wants.

Us, we just look out the window when up North


Or from the cockpit when down South



But I’m willing to bet that we all like the view from each of our boats best!

LOL I never considered audio quality. Your story is funny. My imagination runs wild thinking of what conversations you have monitored.

I haven't really tested the audio quality other than to hear how it sounds coming OUT of the camera when I speak into the phone app.

Mostly, I bought this for the price and reputation of the company and the size of the camera. I'm hoping it will be easy to mount and not in the way. Next test is to connect to my spare cell phone and see how much data it uses.

Your camera is probably superior quality, but a lesser-known brand.

I have a PTZ camera but the size of the thing would be too obtrusive on the boat. Plus, I'm not sure if it had a smartphone app. I had it connected to my house video system that uses Blue Iris.
