Thanks Boat, not normally fatal just very painful for him, hopefully he will go into remission and not have another flare up in the future. Just a lot of hospital visits some surgery and drug juggling trying to get his symptoms in check. When that is all done should be controllable fingers crossed.

BOAT, that's pretty sweet! Which Garmin do you have? Looks like it'd be pretty sweet to be able to leave the chartplotter below deck and then use the iPad in the cockpit. I suppose the only challenge there would be brightness with no bimini or is there functionality that's not available in the relayed screen?

Well, really what you want is to have the chartplotter in the cockpit and the ipad below decks. The chartplotter is water proof and it's also designed to work in sunlight. The ipad is good below decks because it allows you to walk around and get a wine or cracker and you can take it into the head with you. (The ipad - not the wine and cracker).

All the new MAP series Garmin plotters can create a ship wide wi fi. The app on the ipad is Garmin Helm and it works on the iphone too. That's how I check the plotter when I am out on deck on the bow - I use the iphone.

Makes sense. Thanks for the info! Of course both the GPSMap versions I have are too old to work with the wifi adapter you can buy.

Right, I was mistaken - I do not have the GPS MAP series. When i got the 547xs Garmin had just made the switch-over from the GPSMAP case to the to the new case with the big antenna around the housing:

My understanding is that all the ones with the housing pictured in the second picture had a wifi antenna and radio built into the unit. All you do is turn on the wifi right from the chartplotter.

It's works very well on 'boat' - infact I can pick up the chartplotter wifi when the boat is in the driveway on the side of the house from my office on the second floor.

I have the older Garmin so no WIFI for the Laptop or Droid Phone so I am looking at getting one of these when I get AIS to use with OpenCPN.

I was looking at the exact same thing the other day on Ebay, it has NMEA 183 connection so you can access all your instruments on the NMEA bus, I have older ST50 instrument cluster so would work for me
