UPDATE
It's been hard to make progress with this project but I managed to get the X-5 fitted and working. So far it only been tested for a short time on the water and I need to complete the calibration but so far it's working well.https://i.imgur.com/6WmOhUC.mp4

Also I stumbled on some information about the Raymarine optional Rudder Reference Sensor which has enabled me to make my own for a few dollars. Electrically it's working but mechanical fitment has been much harder than anticipated. Will post up photo's when I have a fully working design.

All the best.

Well Raymarine claim the " Rudder Angle Transducer" improves bearing tracking accuracy .... But I'm not prepared to pay $350 to find out if that's true or not :D
From my prospective if it reduces oversteer then in theory that means less port/starboard turns (especially set on a lower controller Response rate) to maintain the current bearing ... That should translate to less operations of the steering motor and lower the power consumption. Which is important to me at the moment as I've not installed solar yet.

All the best.

well, I use ev-100. I don't see any need of improving. Works perfect.

by the way: Best rudder position instrument is this:

Low cost, 1min installing, and you know where your rudder is.

I have on of those Kurz ... I'm actually not impressed with it because it get shaken and misaligned when I tow.
Either way the Raymarine " Rudder Angle Transducer" is for the computer to know the rudder angle (to assist with the steering) not me :)

Hello, maybe this is not interesting now.
I had similar issue with this drive and the main point is the sleep or not sleep of the spring in the plastic wheel.
When I read this message I had no idea what about the people were talking. But after dissasemblie I understand the issue.

I would like to upload some pictures to clarify what we are talking about and how to fix it.

How to fix it: Sanding down the plastic cylinder in the middle of the spring by 0.1 mm and test, if not, repeat.

May be you need to help with a tube to put back the spring on the place.
