Re: Anchor locker too small, so...?
There's storage room under the seats?
In my X there's a 55 liter stainless steel fuel tank (thanks PO!) in the port locker. The starboard is empty. If I ever manage to fix a dinghy/spare outboard engine then the fuel tank will go in there. I already checked, it fits nicely with plenty of room for a spare anchor and rode.
I was thinking of putting a spare anchor in there for the rear of the boat, to stop it swinging around while fishing on the river. However I could put that thing in a stainless or PVC pipe and put the F X7 in there. That would mean having the lift the captain's chair to access it (or simply remove the cover when underway).
For my 1st attempt at actually using this boat (I'm planning for March, though things are going well and it's almost ready...) I'll try the X7 and just walking over the top of the boat to go throw it out of the anchor locker, with my current 22lb Danworth in the rear locker, in case the X7 doesn't work on the bottoms around here.

Re: Anchor locker too small, so...?
Just like a plough anchor (that I have) chain is heavy and awkward to carry, especially while bobbing around on the water. So I'd personally choose to store extra chain the bow lockers (in a carry bag/holder of some form) and pass it out to the deck through the bow hatch.... Or maybe let it out by passing the chain through a heavy/tough/flexi (protective) tube.
But if large chain storage is that important to you why don't you consider cutting out the inside of the anchor enclosure and making a deeper one (maybe add a Windlass at the same time)?... You would obviously remove lots of floatation foam in the process ... which wouldn't be my preference
You should consider one more thing .... the more heavy chain you let out the more you have to hall back in again
All the best.

Interested in seeing what they have done. Do you happen to have their channel name?
Cheers, David

I've only watched 7 minutes of the first video and I see a lot of interesting mods on that
. Dingy davits, bowsprit with seat, dive platform, some kind of portlights in the windows above the v-birth, etc.

Thanks for posting that link Drifter. The episode I watched showed them dropping the mast, hauling out on the beach with a tractor, cooking in the galley, and raising the dinghy on the davits. As C Buchs says, lots of interesting stuff. Scenery and water views are great. Who knew?Drifter wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 12:03 am I'm binge-watching through their playlist... Re: Anchor locker too small, so...?
Love the thread, considering a new anchor purchase as my travels increase. I am sailing in OH and venturing up to the great lakes for foreseeable future. Ohio lakes are mud and sand, western Erie is similar and I think this is my foreseeable cruising grounds. I have a Danforth 8.5lb that came with the boat. The rode sat in a locker for 10 years and is soggy so I don't trust the tensile strength of the line anymore and the chain is only 6ft. So I purchased 30ft 1/4- G43 anodized @ 0.73lb/ft - 22lbs., 150ft 1/2 nylon 3 strand, and am going back and forth on whether I should get a Fortress anchor w adjustable flukes for my conditions or stick w the Danforth. I do not mind adding some rail carriers on the pulpit. I have installed the bwyachts bow roller I understand no anchor is perfect for all conditions but am thinking most of my travels will be for the great lakes for now. I would like to avoid adding another roller.

In that link, which Drifter sent, I was baffled to try and understand how that tractor was going to get that X out of the water and onto the trailer. I did not see that the trailer was completely submerged.

Re: Anchor locker too small, so...?
I must have missed this when you posted Neo... and I had to go back and find my post to see what the heck I was talking about. I'm quite happy with having the Fortress FX-11, chain and rope system totally enclosed in the M's locker. In that post you're answering, I was talking about Bill's concept of having it tied normally up front, yet having the rope portion routed along outside of the boat stanchions/backstays so that you could merely throw out the anchor while in the cockpit. I was interested if anyone had a solution for storage of that (front anchor) but the chain and anchor is stored at the rear... particularly on an M where there really isn't much space. That big rear opening on the X transom has more possibilities.Neo wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 11:33 amJust like a plough anchor (that I have) chain is heavy and awkward to carry, especially while bobbing around on the water. Well I just bought an FX-11 because I want to use it for a few months prior to my cruising trip.pitchpolehobie wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 6:15 am Love the thread, considering a new anchor purchase as my travels increase. Re: Anchor locker too small, so...?
I'm sure it is fine.
I haven't reread the entire thread, but I'm sure somewhere it was stated that no one anchor is good for all bottoms.
When you go on your cruising trip, purchase another design; you will then have the versatility to anchor in a variety of locations.
I have a Danforth and a Lewmar Delta anchor. Others chose differently.
