I just stumbled onto a special offer for Harbor Freight Inside Track members for a "2-In-1 Rechargeable Camping Lantern and Bug Zapper" for $9.99 at: https://www.hfqpdb.com/best_coupon/2-IN ... BUG+ZAPPER (regular price $14.99, as shown at: https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-1-re ... 57519.html)

It claims to put out 200 lumens of light, and according to an old thread over at The Hull Truth sailing forum at https://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-fo ... light.html with lots of impressive and impenetrable-to-me math, just 138 lumens should do the trick for the 2 miles of visibility required under those COLREGS for a mast top light or a stinkpot's all-rounder 360⁰ lamp. Plus you get a bug zapper.

For those without a masthead anchor light like me, one of these with a clever hoist might make for a semi-decent one for occasional use--or at least convincing enough to avoid a fine if you commence rattling off those lumens distance visibility equations until their eyes commence glazing over...Or, it might otherwise just make for a handy little rechargeable hanging cockpit lamp that'll also dispatch the odd mosquito.

Here are a few pix, the last of which illustrating that it must also be reasonably waterproof:

Never a big fan of Harbor Freight quality, some here are.

Another example of the 3 S.W. Principal; Some Will, Some Won't, So What.

Fair enough. I, in contrast, adore that entry-level access to tools at Harbor Freight to try out that I might not otherwise be able to afford, and view those tool truck dudes in more or less this light:

We're it not for Harbor Freight, none of my four boats (if you include the amphibious Amphicar) would be floating, as a quick search of my past postings mentioning "The Big Freight" should soon illustrate. And don't get me started on my agéd motorcycles and other elderly hoopties. But, feel free to pay more if you like...Me? I'd also rather wear that $100 Timex that tells me the tides with a compass than a $10,000 Rolex that tells me mostly Jack Shït, but beguiles the bow bunnies. I gotta bring it home as a bottom-feeder.
