Epoxy primer= barrier coat. Just for clarification.
From totalboat.com
If your boat has a fiberglass hull, you MUST protect it with a barrier coat beneath your bottom paint. Just 10 mils (about 4 to 5 coats) of a barrier coat like TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer is all it takes to establish an aggressive barrier coat

Hi Piddle and F.
My 2 cents.....
I had ablative on my underhull when I bought my X long ago. It is almost all gone now, over more than 10 years. I am in saltwater 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Some of those times I have 5 inches of stringy growth, other times I have a plethora if bitty barnacles, but most times I have only a brown stain from the tannic acid present in our waters here. I don't plan doing anything. I just scrape the bottom stuff off and enjoy the brown that is only visible when trailering.

Just to close the loop on some of the discussion, the text from the 2005 original dealer invoice reads:
"Epoxy and antifouling bottom paint (Micron)"
Pretty sure that equates to the ablative paint discussed.
I gave yet to get underneath and tap around on the hull. Hoping the epoxy layer and little time actually in the water means we won't have blistering.
Really appreciate everyone sharing their expertise and experience. Quite an education for us

Slow but steady progress shining up the lower hull.
Aft side is original after power wash and scrubbing.
Forward is after 1 pass with 3M Marine Restorer & Wax using medium foam cutting pad. I plan to do another pass with a good carnauba wax.

...and another mystery part found loose under the rear berth.
Some sort of aluminum bracket perhaps one foot wide.

Battery bracket under the steps.

Thanks... That makes sense.
I guess they just pulled that out when adding the second battery (both which now just float loosely in the battery compartment.

It would be a real good idea to strap down your batteries. "Float loosely" is not a phrase that goes well with battery.

In my 2005

, to keep them snug, I jammed thick styrofoam all around the batteries. They donβt budge.
