We had a period on the Board where we autolocked threads after 30 days or something, a policy which has since changed.
If you have a thread you want to post do, just start a new thread with a link to the locked thread and we can unlock....its a lot of work to manually unlock the threads of course...
Sorry for the inconvenience...
The Mods...
M Steering Dramas
I have an 05 M with a 25 HP Merc big foot. If I don't disconnect the motor when sailing it will hit the sides of the motor well and not let me get full rudder. The BWY quick disconnect works great. The steering arm on the M's should be an inch or so longer in order to put the rudders to the stops when turning both right and left.
Hydraulic Steering
With regard to this question quite a few here have done it including myself. I installed the Australian made Hydrive 212 system 2 years ago, beats the crappy cable steering no problem. The 212 fits the Mac M perfectly.

Speaking of mods, how about this sort of thing for the ultimate myth making Mac mod?

We also had a 2002 X w/DF50 and agree with everything you say. Didn't see a noticeable difference in performance motor up or down, and left it down much of the time. It never flopped when up, but then it weighed 100 pounds less than the DF60/70.mssydnie wrote:Guess I'm a lonely voice...I love to sail but don't care about performanece...slow and quiet is fine with me. So...I don't care about the drag of the motor and often as not leave it down even when sailing...don't mind the drag and boat seems to steer and track great...does anybody know? Maybe motor down acts like a skeg? Also, I don't have any steering trouble with motor up. 2002 X w/50hp Suzuki DF-50...I guess motor is not that heavy.
From one who took off sailing one morning in light winds after anchoring overnight, with the rudders still up, I can tell you the motor definitely acts like a skeg. I didn't really notice anything wrong until I tilted the motor up out of the water and the boat almost did a U turn.
