One nice thing about little British cars - at least older ones - is that they have a lovely little knurled wheel on the distributor (aka 'the verier adjustor') that allows you to minutely change the timing, advancing or retarding, to compensate for the available fuel octanes. No rotation of the distributor is needed, and you can move it in counted clicks, for when you need to move it back.

Got one of these on my Jag; as I recall there was one on my MG as well.

I once spent no more than thirty seconds wondering why such a cool and useful hooyah was not on U.S. cars. Simple: every third moron would crank on too much advance regardless of what he was running for fuel, then inevitably hole a piston. This was in prehistoric times before the phone number of the liablity lawyers was displayed in 24-point font on the cover of the phone book, but still...

BTW, are you sure that's not what happend to that piston you posted earlier? :wink:
