The 'stache comes with a story... I was once a Race Director for the "Core States Bike Race", held here in Phila. It was the only US race that qualified for World Cup points, and as such was a fairly important race - it has since been renamed. Anyway, every year I'd grow the stache out (which was normally a very conservative edges-of-mouth fur strip) into a long 'handle-bar' stache to go with the bicycle theme... also, it made it easy for folks to recognise me so they could find me during the crowded race. One year "She Who Must Be Obeyed" suggested that she liked it, and that I should keep it year 'round. So, although I worked for Itsy-Bitsy-Machines at the time - and those were the days of *very* strict dress-code regs at IBM [white shirt, blue suit, red tie, short hair, etc.] - I managed to get by with it since Core States Bank (now Wachovia) was one of our major customers and, after all, I was doing this for a customer!
In the end, it proved a major asset, since although many customers may not remember your name, they *do* remember your reputation... and when they asked "Hey, get me that guy from IBM with the big moustache", there was only one guy they could want! I made a lot of commission off that 'stache!
(Since then, I can't shave it off since nobody would recognise me anymore!)
