On the first few trips last year,I dutifully installed the windvane, and removed it before trailering, which is a real pain. Then I realized I rarely ever look at it. I find it easier to feel the wind, and watch the waterto make adjustments. Telltales are more useful than the windex to me. My wife has been getting pretty good at reading the sail trim and wind/water direction now,but she used to be a constant "windex watcher".
I still put it on the mast sometimes-it looks good up there!

I havent been able to get on the board for a few days. (Slow server??)
Otherwise I wouldve jumped on this thread.
I own an ST 40 w rotovecta and both times I forgot to remove the cups and trailered i wound up buying new cups. Now I keep a spare set on the boat.
Oh yeah, had a Blue Heron land on my mast head once and break them.

I guess it is true that I look at my windvane more often when the boat is parked at the house versus when I am out sailing (you can tell if the cold fronts have gone through, etc.)
So yes, I do agree that an experienced sailor doesn't need a windvane, but it is still nice to have one for convenience.
Unfortunately, it seems a young Osprey has found my windvane and is perching on the extension piece now. Windvane isn't broken....yet. I suppose it all has to do with my post to this board some weeks or months ago when I said that birds never sat on my Mac mast like they always used to on my O'day. Obviously, I offended the Internet bird gods and jinxed myself.
