Is this the Brittany Spears guy I keep hearing about?

Furling a 150 genoa down to a jib size will never match the performance of a jib itself. Adding a luff pad will help take out some of the extra fullness in the genoa and can make it's shape closer to acceptable. Moving the cars to the cabin top tracks may also help, but the shape will never be as good.

If you find you are sailing often with the genoa furled, you would be better off with a jib to start with.

I much prefer the spike on the outer end of my whisker pole. Usually the sail is flying outboard of the lifelines when you are setting up the pole. With the spike you don't have to get the sail back in close enough to clip the end on.

I also prefer the spike for it's self releasing feature. If you get a big puff or for any reason need to let the sheets loose you can do so and the sail will self release from the end of the whisker pole. The pole simply drops to the lifelines.

Maybe the spike is why I have never damaged my whisker pole, although I suspect a back winded sail would be the most common way to bend a pole.

There are a lot of light air days on Western Ontario where the genny will be useful Beene....

Down on the Cape, I will carry a jib (if I can get one with luff tape to fit my furler) next year...too many days the genny is overpowered.

Stephen,

Most of "our vintage" Macs came with jib, Genny as an optional addition ... did you get only the Genoa?

If you had a hank-on jib somewhere in the bilge, the sailmakers charge about $5/ft. to add the #6 luff tape. Otherwise, you might find a used jib already "taped" in the surplus inventory at Minney's Yacht Surplus in Tinseltown (click Headsails to 25').

I've ordered from them before and they are good to work with. When I didn't like the fit of a used mylar sail from them, they took it back for full refund w/no questions -- my only cost was 2-way shipping. I trust their rating system for sail condition. Fact is, the SoCal guys say it's a great place to browse on a Saturday afternoon ... maybe on your next trip to SoCal.

My 'snap the stick' mode was punting down the Hudson on a light breeze, running with it, and then seeing the flags snapping a smart salute at full extension (15 mph+?) coming dead at me on the shore.

Genny backwinded and SNAP...the deed was done...

:mac19:

With genny you can sail harder heaver sail 1.50oz

Image

spinnaker 3/4 oz this one for the mac19 is about 200sq ft. My custom made spin is between 300-350 sq ft for my :mac19: so how hard will I be able to run without fear of blowing it to shreads she's made from challenge
spinnaker cloth my :mac19: has hard chines so she does not tend to roll "heel " as freely as the :macm: :macx: a little more predictable & tends to dig in once set

I may need some beach whales for rail meat Sh-t I could be in trouble now :o to keep me from being overpowered . Just a thought buy some blow up dolls fill them with ballast "water" hang them on the rail look good with out all the BS :D :D :D :P I'm I treading water now :) :)
:D :D :D
