Since I cant really explain my own sojourns........... having never been isolated more than 30 days,
I too wonder.

Obviously, as you point out, there is some notoriety involved, why else publish all about it...... I know when I do the disappearing act, I don't proclaim via a blog, or count the days, or seek to update eveyone on my adventures, I kind of save the story telling for after, since I would prefer to be busy during my adventures............ I

But,(DELETED CONTENT.....................................)
some cajones maybe present....
but again, most western women see no need to hang around one man, MNN (morning, noon, and night)

I agree completely on most of this, when you plan from the outset, and the goal is days, not experiences..... this adventure seems of little interest to me.

I mean really, how does it help your children, grandchildren, friends, spouse... whatever.... what good are you bringing in the world......?

Hey Chip, & fellow Mac-ers', maybe we're overlooking that Days in the log book isnt the only thing the "old feller" plans to log :o ...ie. distance, endurance, health, fishing, and, last but not least a full time cook on board. (see, bet you thought the "last but not least" :P would be logging something else :D )

Oh yes yawall' did "thought that" :D

The corollary to "one man's trash is another man's treasure" might be this:
"One man's dream is another man's hull."

Reid is living his dream, and aware he is also exploring uncharted waters of his psyche. Part of the experiment is undoubtedly the relationship with Soanya. Somethings are meant to be, others subject to mid journey adjustment. We'll have to see what happens.

Ordinary men have accomplished seeming impossible things for love.

Reid is living his dream, and aware he is also exploring uncharted waters of his psyche. Part of the experiment is undoubtedly the relationship with Soanya.
Abstract:
One of the reasons why women participate in long-term ocean cruising is because of relationship commitments. During 1992-99 and 2000-03, ethnographic studies informed by the traditions of symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, ethnomethodology, and feminist inquiry were conducted with Western women cruisers. Materials collected were analysed using grounded theory and the Pamphilon zoom model. A Marxist/socialist feminist critique emerged from the interpretation of empirical materials. This critique demonstrated that some women had a lived experience that involved exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, and cultural imperialism. The experience relegated them to the domestic sphere of the cruising/sailing enterprise as well as excluded them from decision making as they were psychically and economically dependent on their cruising partners.

I thinking of adding some of the Pamphilion zoom to my M this winter. could add 2-3 knots to the hull speed :)

Thats a lot of words to describe a 55 and 23 year old relationship.

How about 'arm candy' for brevity?

Im not sure what a 23 yo female alone on a boat thinks when looking at a 55 yo crusty. But, I know what a 55 yo crusty thinks about when looking at a 23 yo female, and it AINT ABOUT SAILING. Ole Reid will be braggin' for years to come--if he lives, survives, and his heart and whatever else holds "UP." heh heh.
Opps, that was naughty.

Perhaps another element demonstrating the immaturity of the 55 yr old.....

or perhaps few self aware, intelligent, and capable women would put up with that crap.

Now, would I do it.......

That my friends is a question I hope never to have to deal with....

because If I ever become reduced to dating that young.....

I pretty much will have already lost that which I was seeking.

i could not handle 1000 days at sea with one woman no matter how fit she was, maybee reid is doing it from some sort of jealousy angle, take a woman half your age on a boat for 1000 days, make it public without the naughty stuff, leave that to the imagination of a bunch of crusty old sailors to fill in the blanks as you see fit

so what will history judge him as if he is sucessfull? a stud or a mariner?

longest i did on a boat without touching land was 9 weeks,i only had 36 hours in port before we sailed back out to the top end of the North sea,i managed to find a girl (you guys can fill in the blanks) and then after she had gone home i got as drunk as i could before we set out into a storm that had me experiencing my one and only dose of sea sickness, boy did i enjoy that run ashore :D

sailing around the world, hopping from island to island etc, appeals big time, that for me is the dream, and to do it with my wife
