Hi All!

Hope all goes well for everyone!
Turkey Day here is fast approaching! One of my favorite holidays!

Just finished laying down the last plank (finally  ) of flooring for the family room and new (future) kitchen area with the help of my younger daughter! That took longer than the original plan :D :D :D I’ll hold off on the quarter round base trim until the cabinetry is installed. Now it’s time to clean up the garage (again :( ) so we can have room to begin cleaning up the new cabinetry for priming. Debating on whether to finish paint before or after final install… there are pros and cons to both. The weather /temperature may be a deciding factor if things cool off too much in the coming weeks as the garage isn’t heated…(hmmm … could be an serendipitous opportunity there to broach the topic of getting a heating and air filtration system there with the Admiral …. wink: :D … probably not…..).

Recent visits to Home Depot and Lowe’s was sorta surprising in that it seems I’m not the only customer to continue to delay funding larger discretionary home improvement projects, such as bathroom or kitchen remodels, due to concerns about the economy. My local stores are feeling it too based on what my friends at the Pro Counters are saying. There are also continuing delays/availability issues as well it would appear and pricing for lumber has increased (again :? ). Things are what they are…..

For now I’m going to attempt to mount permanent castor wheels to the China cabinet so it can be moved around without calling over several neighbors. That thing weighs a ton! For the remodeling I temporarily secured it on a pair of moving dollies from Harbor Freight. That has worked out so well during this project that it will be worth making the effort to make it a more permanent feature. Great invention wheels! I’ll probably carry this theme on to other items of heavy furniture like the dry bar, bookshelf-cabinets and couches.
(Yes, I’ll be adding accessible wall anchors to the tall items to avoid any tip over potentials  :!: 8) ) I like this idea as it will make moving them a breeze and avoid scratching the new flooring!

Test fit of the new smaller searchlights looks promising. The included brackets are non-magnetic stainless which is a bonus as it means less for me to fabricate. An idea occurred to me to mount the wires inside the fwd bow rail tube uprights.. it would look cleaner but I’m not sure the extra efforts would really be worth it. My plan has been to tie wrap the wire to the uprights then make sealed deck penetrations to run the wiring back behind the inner cabin shell. One thought was to take advantage of a small accessible lip in the inner liner Rodger made to the bottom lip of the shell to tuck this wiring out of the way. The other was to run the wiring in the side trough formed by the ballast transfer tubes in a watertight conduit. I have prepositioned spare circuit breakers in my DC electrical panel. A control switch will be routed up to the pedestal for easy access. I’d like to get this done in a day’s time once we haul out…

There has been a small uptick in the cruiser southerly migration on our portion of the ICW! Some really big ones and several smaller ones as well. They are a welcome sight but about a month later than in previous years.

Gotta go and see if the Admiral and daughter are up for an afternoon cruise of our own this afternoon. The weather is in the 70s, clear sunny skies and a light breeze. Prefect for a couple hours on the water!

Best Regards,
Over Easy 8) 8)

Envious that you are enjoying boating in November. Keep posting so we can live vicariously.

Best I can do is go visit her in storage.

Hi All!

We FINALLY got to go on a full day cruise! A full 8 hours! Yippie! 8) 8)
The plan evolved enroute settling on circumnavigating Parris Island (home of the USMC Basic Training Facility and the USMC Air Training Base for the F35 and F/A-18 Fighter Jets) and the City of Beaufort along with several adjacent communities.

We got to the boat/loaded-up/refueled and we’re off by Noon!
Younger daughter and her ‘puppy’ Bonzo came too! 8) 8)
Temperatures were in the high 70s, clear sunny skies, winds calm and water glass smooth!
We picked up several foot long deli subs, fruit salad and Southern Coleslaw for the trip.
We packed a small cooler with drinks and wine spritzers.

We headed down the Beaufort River toward a receding fog pulling back from the morning toward the Atlantic.
We finally caught up to the fog where the Beaufort River meets the Broad River where we turned onto the Broad River in Fort Fremont Sound. The air temp remained in the 70s whereas the water temp was about 61 which explains the fog.

We traveled up the Broad River while we ate halves of the subs and salad for our lunch and up past Skull Creek (the passage one would take to Hilton Head), under the Broad River Bridge and on up to Cotton Island into Whale Branch Creek. We pulled into the Whale Branch Public Boat Landing (as it has a floating pier) so MacGregor and Bonzo could have a well deserved piddle break which they both took advantage of   ). From Whale Branch Creek we eventually came to the Coosaw River where we turned right to meet the upper portion of the Beaufort River by Brickyard Landing. By then the sun was fading into a glorious sunset! Continuing down the Beaufort River into the calm clear evening we turned on the Nav Lights and rigged our existing fwd Remote Searchlight. Sunset was at about 5:20 PM. It was full on dark by about 6:00 PM. We reduced speed to about 3-to-4 mph keeping an eye out for any potential fishing boats or nighttime kayakers. We landed back at our slip in Port Royal at about 7:30 PM to complete our circumnavigation of Parris Island. While in previous years we have completed the circumnavigation this is the first time we have done this from this direction. It’s was interesting to see the various landmarks from the opposite approach! It was a beautiful and perfect day! Nearly 8 hours (if you count the time for refueling) out on the water without interruption! And to think this is halfway through November!!! 8) 8)

The Suzuki DF60A performed flawlessly! We were running at about 3500-to-4000 rpm which gave us a GPS ground track speed of about 7 mph. Our timing was such that we were headed into the tidal River currents virtually the entire trip. The tidal currents averaged between 2 and 4 mph. Fuel consumption was less than 11 gallons (not an exact number by eyeball which we will try to verify on our next day trip  :) ).

Being confined to boating within the shores of a moderately sized lake, I'm drooling at your availabilty of changing scenic waterways. Great photos. But I do have a question, attached to the starboard forward lifeline attachment point is a dohicky to which is attached a line to your bimini. Might I ask what that is and what is its purpose? Just being curious.

Hi Krum!

Thank you! Yes we do enjoy a beautiful area we are fortunate to be here.

I believe you are asking about this

Image

Image

We have one on either side of our Bimini to provide tension for it.

They are metal paracord cam locks.
We use NiteEyes reflective paracord.
The cam locks and paracord lets us quickly and easily erect and collapse the Bimini. The paracord has less view obstruction than the old bulky web straps and have a tensile lid capability of over 150 lbs per side / over 300 lbs combined. Much more than enough strength.

We bought ours at Lowe’s but are avialable from multiple sources as well. Hope this helps.

Hi All!

It’s Tuesday of Thanksgiving Week here in South Carolina!
Temps in the mid 70s with clear skies and just the barest breeze. Near perfect day!

Today we’re out on the beach at Hunting Island State Park! It beautiful here with the gentle surf breaking on the broad sand beach. Tide has been going out so everything is picture perfect. Virtually have the place to ourselves. Nary even a seagull!

The Admiral and younger daughter are out strolling with the “puppies”. It’s about 4 PM so there’s about an hour and some till sunset. Picture perfect.

I’ll post pictures when we get back home tonight.

Haven’t gotten back to being out on the boat since circumnavigation of Parris Island but lots of other stuff getting done.

As I mentioned previously the new laminate plank flooring for the new kitchen area and family/livingroom. Scoured my daughter’s car..it looks better than it has in a while! Also mechanically polished her headlamps from an off white yellow haze to crystal clear. She should be able to see considerably further at night now. Also had all her brakes & rotors replaced. The pads were down to 10-to-15% of original so it was time. I’ll feel better as she travels back out to Oregon for her winter ski instructor season. (We do what we can when we can…)

Older daughter is still headed in from her trip out West. She’s somewhere mid-continent now and hopefully avoiding any of that fast moving storm system crossing through. She should be here late tomorrow or early Thursday.

The Admiral has gotten the Turkey and preparations are getting underway for Thanksgiving. She made a ‘warm-up’ fresh blueberry pie for desert last night! (I LIKE PIE!)

We are fortunate and we recognize that it is a tenuous world in which we all live. To that end we try and give back to our communities to help those who are experiencing want and need… We’ve given to World Central Kitchen as well as to local organizations and churches annotating that these are on our part on behalf of the forum. One does what one can when one can. Life is what good you choose to make with it. I know there are many others here on this forum who also take the opportunities given them to help others in need… May we all try to leave this place a better, kinder, gentler, empathetic and sympathetic place than we arrived.

Best Regards to Everyone

Hi Russ!

Boy that looks like you’ve done a great job of bundling your boat in a nice blanket for the coming winter.

Meanwhile here in SC the weather is still pretty nice! It has still been in the mid 60s to 70s during the day only dropping to the low 50s at night for the most part. The forecast is to be much of the same into December… which led us to extend our slip to the end of the year… I doubt we will stay in that whole time but this should allow us to enjoy several more excursions before Christmas.

The younger daughter is headed West yesterday to her ski instructor job (in Oregon this year for a change). The older daughter arrived back on Wednesday evening from her adventures out West. Just a two day overlap but it was really nice to have them both here for Thanksgiving!!!

I’ve got to get my act together and re-prioritize my To-Do-Lists for the renovations and boat/trailer now that the older daughter will be here for a couple months. It’s nice to have an extra pair of hands to help out like when the younger one was here. Makes it more fun too!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Hi All!

It was another near perfect day here in SC! 8) 8)
We took the opportunity to get out on the water for several hours on glass smooth waters, clear skies and temps in the mid 70s!
Ooder daughter came with us and brought her standard poodle too! :D

Turned left out of the marina to go past Beaufort city waterfront and under the swing bridge then on up to explore the creek that goes by Marsh Harbor BoatWorks. They are nearly full with big boats that have been put up for the the winter maintenance cycle. Popular place to have serious work done it appears. We explored this estuary till it started to narrow up a bit too tight to turn around but after navigating a nautical version of a “K” turn we reversed course and headed back to where another rivulet branched off towards the Beaufort River that was new to us. Interesting section that has a lot of potential for fishing/shrimping/crabbing in the future.

Ala in All it was a very nice day out!

Hi All!

:( :( Rainy days and cold temps here in SC have ‘dampened’ the opportunities and ‘chilled’ the motivation to get out on the water these past several days :( :( .

Comes with the changing seasons and the shorter days…. Humrff!

Tonight was to be the annual Beaufort Waterfront Boat Parade which we had registered for as we were here and still afloat but the unseemly wet cold rainy weather led the organizers to cancel it … Bummer….. It’s rare that we get to be here, never mind have Over Easy afloat, to participate in this local holiday tradition. Was sorta looking forward to it (if you can’t tell  :D ). Oh well, it is what it are…
Maybe some other year….

Had planned on stringing up lights and mounting our inflatable Snoopy &Woodstock Biplane to the foredeck to make “Snoopy’s Aircraft Carrier which would have been powered by the really quite Honda generator we got for our extended cruising plans. I figure that all is for the best and it gives me a bit more time to further plan out the next opportunity. To be honest, I really wasn’t looking forward to the Admiral and I being in full foul weather gear running a AC generator in the rain anyway…. This is supposed to be something fun, not an endurance contest! :D :D

Meanwhile slow progress is being made on the new kitchen and family room refurbishments… some progress is always better than no progress. We’re at the point where we can start cleaning the ‘new to us’ cabinets in preparation for the first bond coat and first primer. We changed our plans a bit in that with the advent of the colder weather we will hold off on the finish painting until the cabinets and counter units are installed. That way we won’t have to be as concerned about the inevitable nicks/scratches that are bound to be occurring. A professional painter acquaintance agreed that this is the better choice given our piecemeal incremental approach as well as for getting a better quality paint finish.

We’re starting with one of the more difficult pieces which is a 56” x 48” x 12” three door wall cabinet that has a nice set of slot cubbies under. It’s a bit big and bulky so it’s gonna take a bit of planning as well as some help from my friends to get it hung up and secured. I’m hoping to have it up this week… we’ll see how it goes….

New Holiday lights per the Admiral are a new task on the ‘To-List’ for this weekend. Nothing particularly fancy but definitely an upgrade is in order to brighten things up a bit. Then there is the tree to be gotten which is a novel experience here in the South vs. what I’ve gotten used to up in New Hampshire over the past couple of decades. It will be an interesting experience for us! :D :D

That also means new interior lights and decor if I’m not mistaken are on the Admiral’s mind as well. It’s good to make new traditions!

Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to the coming holidays. The important thing is to enjoy and appreciate the people around you as well as doing what one can to make our world a better place than it is now while we have that opportunity.

Hi All!

Well we finally got out on the water this Saturday afternoon!
It’s been a long week stuck ashore with the end of year holiday preparations.
The house cleaning
The organizing
The tree getting (yes we can still get real Christmas trees here in South Carolina (that actually look like their supposed too!)
The tree stand recovered from its hiding spot
The tree set
Even got started on the holiday cookies

Doesn’t look like I got any cabinets cleaned or primed so far :(
It been sort unseasonably cool this week and the forecast is for some sort of Artic clod front to move in later Sunday night…wind chill on Monday is supposed to get down into the teens! That’s ridiculous for our area of SC! Brrrrr! :o

Anyway we got out today for a short sunset cruise.
Pictures below:

It was really nice to be out and about!
Hope to possibly get out on Sunday while the temperatures are still pleasant before that Artic front barrels in Sunday night.

Hi All!

We snuck out for a couple hours earlier this week prior to the cold front moved in.
While there were some small white caps and spray we had a great time out and about!
The wind was up so we stayed in the main waterways instead of exploring the smaller estuary areas.
(The indigenous windage on a Mac26X is a handful in a light breeze never mind when there is a stiff breeze with gusts. :D :D )

It was nice though to get out and take advantage of still being afloat this time of year! 8) 8)
We’ve been toying with staying on water through the New Year celebrations to watch the fireworks from the water (we missed watching the 4th of July display  ). Have to check with the marina manager to see if we can have a couple days latitude on our slip rental before we haul out….

We were able to bring the puppies along and they had a blast.
MacGregor enjoyed his jacket given the cool temps and wind.
Here’s some photos from our most recent outing:

Hi All!

Saturday (12/20) was another nice day down here so we jumped in for an afternoon sunset cruise ( how can the sun set before 5:30 ??? That’s just not right…..)

Not much more than an hour or so on the water but some time is always better than no time :D :) 8)

We took a wander up Battle Creek and found one of the boats that had been moored out for some time apparently broke free from its mooring and drifted up on to a sand bar. It tipped over from its fixed keel when the tide ran out and seems to have capsized when the tide came back in. Not a pleasant thing for anyone for sure! :o :? :(

Meanwhile, as there was nothing to be done and it seems this happened a couple days ago we motored on to enjoy our brief outing.

The weather was in the mid 69s calm and clear.
We had a beautiful sunset and got to se a couple dolphins as well. Nice time out!

Hi All!

Sunday (12/21).
We got out a bit earlier and were able to spend several more hour today cruising in this wonderful weather we are having! It was almost 70 this afternoon with continuing bright sunny clear skies and calm conditions. The water was as smooth as glass for the most part!

This time we went up Cat Cut to the Cowen River and on to Distant Island Creek. What a beautiful day! Hard to believe is The middle of December less than a week to Christmas!

It’s just beautiful and we count ourselves fortunate to be able to enjoy this special place.
