What's the rush with "instant hot water"? Jus start the kettle on the Origio while finishing yer last glass of chardonnay!

In response to the immediate post responding to post on instant hot water.....

Chardonnay while waiting for the morning tea...hmmmmmmmm.

Rule of Thumb
Anything that heats , using electricity , burns A LOT of energy.
Something as simple as a 12vdc coffee maker , takes forever to make coffee and will suck the bottom out of a battery !

Same way with a 120vac coffee maker , high wattage for such a simple device.

We tend to use a camp oven when making bread on land, while we have a Magna oven we haven't made bread in it yet ... we do have a pizza stone to go in the oven ... MMM pizza oven bread, yummy.

We also travel with a fish smoker, while we have hickory chips our favourite smoking mix uses black tea leaves, rice, and star anise and a few other goodies.

Pizza in a Magma works great with a stone! We often do damper and also have done a cake or two. We have found success is keeping the bread/cake not too deep to allow them to cook quickly to reduce burning the bottom. We place a trivett under the stone or cake tin to lift it a bit higher to reduce burning the bottom of the bread...

This is our 2nd stone, the 1st broke, they really do work well, like you we found that thinner works better.

Shanker - we had one of the instant hot water devices in our kitchen and it was rated at 1200 Watts...thats a lot of juice for a 12VDC system...30 minutes of use would drain your battery (Group 24) to about 1/2 charge...FYI.

Louis we use the campbells or Hienz chunkies, lamb and veggies with mushroom sauce or beef strauganoff etc 529 gms mixed with any pasta packet to suit , much better than eating either on their own but way too much for one person, we have soups, sardines, noodles etc for when just not hungry or too tired from the sun.
Fish rolled in rice crumbs and egg makes up the biggest portion of our meals outside brekky but only when we can cook it on the barby before the insects descend (dark), it's just too messy to cook inside IMO.
As for the instant hot water (why?) 1200w is 100 amps and half an hour would effectivly for practical purposes flatten a 70-100 ah battery but if it's instant? there would be only instantaneous draw LOL.
We usually get a week out of one litre in the Origo so a months supply is only four bottles why use electric?, we usually buy a gallon and fill the four bottles but sometimes have to stock up due to lack of availability in indigenous areas as with standard fuel (sniffing).

OK, the convienience of that instant hot water just will not work on a sailboat. I'll just have to get out their and determine how much heating fuel to have on board. I have to remember to keep in mind the limits of electricity on the water. I think my green is oozing out

We have an LPG instant hot water system similar to this one


It's hanging off the stern wall next to the sink inside the toilet area, I still have to run the LPG line and the flue, it has a 'D' cell battery in it's battery compartment, when there is a pressure drop caused by the water tap being turned on the heater and the water become Hot H2O, we will eventually install a shower on the transom.

Coleman makes a pretty small hot water on demand unit that is pretty friendly

Putting that LPG unit in below deck requires an LPG locker, a shutoff solenoid, and bot LPG and CO detectors of course.

1200 watts / 13vdc = 92.3 amps your right about the battery drain , not to mention the wire would have to be about as big around as your arm !

As said , electricity whether marine or home is about the most ineffiecent way to produce heat .

The problem with the Coleman and Primus instant hot water systems is that the pilot light goes out when you shut off the shower not allowing for the water saving procedure of wet down, stop shower ,soap up, and rise off without relighting.Contacted Primus who stated the pilot light would eventually heat the water in the system to steam and yah yah yah etc dangerous!!!

On the food front......pizza using a stone and grill on flat bread....quick easy and tasty

Nearly forgot....with red wine ofcourse to aid digestion

Agree with that Gypsy our daughter moved into a new house with a 6kw space heater, on helping her move I mentioned she should be very careful using it.
She got a bill a week or so ago instead of the $3-400 she was expecting? it was over $2000 for the 90 days which is a bit hard for a single mother pensioner, two lessons electricity is innefficient for heating and you don't always have to learn the hard way, advice is cheap.
