Dave, from that point of view - rolled up, with or without a sew-on, or a sock is going to get you mildew if it's left wet enough. I always try to unfurl and dry mine out as soon as the opportunity presents itself. When we re-bag the sails for over-winter storage in the basement (which is a long time!) I jury rig a clothesline there to make absolutely sure, before stuffing them away.

Ross, the reason I mentioned the half cover is preventing UV rays destroying the sail and threads, also to keep sail dry during the time it is on the trailer in Trailering position. The under side is open for circulation and much better than a sock that encloses the sail.
My head sail is in exellent shape because of this cover.
If you have mildew on the sail , while furled and in trailer position mix 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and spray the sail, let sit for 5 min. than soak the sail with fresh water...Mildew gone. Best time to do this is just before you go sailing so it will dry out.

I am following that thread with great interest. I was just about ready to get a new 150% genoa with a sock.....Why?
4 years ago I bought the factory 150% genoa with a sewn in UV - cover ; it handles and looks great but after 3 years the problems started. Oviously the sail stretches, the Uv cover did not and is comletely torn in the lower half of the sail and comes off in pieces.....it looks awful...

For convenience, you can't beat the sunbrella sewn-on cover. On the west end of Lake Erie, gusts of 35-45 knots are common and we'll see the occasional 65-70 knot blows from time to time. The sunbrella takes the wind in stride, and really protects the head sail. I've seen dozens of sewn on dacron covers torn to shreds in these blows, but have seen only 1 sunbrella do so (it broke lose and unfurled). It does add some additional weight, but for the protection it's well worth it. My 150 genoa came with one, and I picked up a new jib (KH 2000) last summer with blue sunbrella (the jib that came with the boat did not have a sail cover) and at the end of the season, we simply took it home, sprayed it clean with a hose and it looks good as new. As long as you don't furl it when it's wet/damp we haven't had problems with any mildew.

As far as add-on's go, had anybody come across instructions for DIY?
I'm now concerned about stretching and shrinkage.
(Sure would be nice to get Judy's input in this thread!)
