My engine was directly connected from the time I bought the boat until about a year afterwards when I put the Perko switch in (that's how the factory does it), and we have no "season" here so it's always connected to the battery.
Never ran the battery down in that course of time, but then it's also never gone more than three months without being used.

Changed mine today - both foam and gasket. The foam was very dirty. The total cost was only $12.00 and took about 40 minutes

. And I actually enjoyed the process, it was more fun than work.
