I would have sworn....
it was hurricane damage...
it looks like many of the boats that got slammed against pilings...
theres still a bunch of boats for sale in fla, w/ hurricane damage.
and some comming back to market after repairs...
-careful.... look for a water level (line) in the cabins.
(boattraderonline )
now talk about a can of worms....

Congratulations on getting it right, Kevin!Bill at BOATS 4 SAIL wrote:I just got a call from the original owner. He was at Bahia Honda State Park, on the water, mast up.

Actually, not so elementary... based upon that description I thought it may also have been possible that it resulted from 'yard damage' where another vessel was being jockeyed around in the boatyard and struck the Mac.Frank C wrote: Terrific research, Kevin ...

But thanks for the kudos, Moe. I wasn't trying to 'compete' to see who was right at all - I just wanted to offer my thoughts on the subject - but I am gratified to see that I was at least on the right track.

It sold for $7,345.65.
I just got this from the PO. "Hey Bill, Thought you might be interested to know that I weighed her on the trailer before I left and she weighed 4200 pounds. The cruiser that hit me wiighed in excess of 10,000 pounds and was traveling in excess of 25 mph. The Mac can take a hit."

I inspected this MAC
Hi, I just joined your board today.
I live near the auction place and thought seriously about buying this boat. A repair estimate for this MAC was $9000 from the yard it is stored in. That is for a complete outside fiberglass repair and finish, professionally done. Does not include interior finish work, rigging repair, etc.
I took extensive photos of the damage. The hull is cracked right down to the water ballast tank, but did not damage the ballast tank. Also, there is no damage to the daggerboard structure. The port side of the forward deck is still strong enough to walk on. In my opinion, this shows that the boat design is very strong to withstand a hit like that and not impact critical structures.
Actually, I just bought the other unit where the auction just ended this morning: the 97 26X MAC. I was fortunate to meet the owner one day at the auction yard. He was selling it because his wife is too ill to go out with him anymore and will probably not recover. He is probably in his late 70's so he's getting too old to use it much anymore, also. Very friendly, very nice sincere person. The boat was only used in fresh water inland Florida lakes. He said he rarely used the motor. He sailed and fished from it. He always stored the boat under cover. It's painted green (not blue as some think in the photos).
I went for the 97 26X over the damaged 26M because of these reasons:
1. the 26M had almost no options with it: no trailer, no roller furling, no bimini, etc.
2. the mast height of the 26M is two feet taller than the 26X. This is a hassle for me because I will go out to the ocean at Haulover Inlet where the fixed bridge height is just enough to clear the 26X mast, but not the 26M. My neighbor on my canal has a 26X and he barely clears that bridge.
3. The cockpit size - I think Macgregor really blew it with the cockpit on the 26M compared to the 26X for Florida users. The 26X cockpit is much more user friendly for water access, roominess, etc.
4. With the money saved, I can put a bigger and newer motor on the 26X at my liesure.
Just my personal opinions.

Miami,
Welcome, and congratulations on the new boat. Looks like the boat you bought was listed in another auction earlier this month as well... I guess that sale fell through after the fact. Actually, I believe this was the auction that was being discussed here because it was listed as a MacGregor 26 SL.
Looks like your boat has opening ports installed in the side windows... bill/boatsforsail suggested this mod a while back, and it's on my list of things to do (I'd like to add black ones, but they seem to be pretty hard to find).
