I think there is a big difference between bringing a boat from Boston to Florida, where numerous ports, CG and ICW all give you a multitude of options for bailing out in weather, and Rich's trip where AFAIK there are only a few port options on the way, so the chance of getting stuck due to engine failure, for example, are much greater. I would also describe it as offshore, whereas the East Coast is really coastal cruising. Each has its own unique set of dangers, as well as some shared ones.
I think I would want a full up, three shift crew to overnight sail a new boat in these waters.

I was down at the Enterprise Sea removing the name and buffing her out! She is ready to go. It also took me two freaken trips will a full Honda CR-V to get all my crap out! How did it all get in there!
Anyway...I have been in contact with several USCG certified Captains that also are ASA sailing instructors...all quality guys with experience and resumes longer than my leg..I will be going that route!
As far as that Huner 38....holy smokes...I didn't even bother myself with looking at boats that were obviously out of my price range...what is the point?
I have done a complete...and I mean complete budget and if I buy the boat for 37.5K, by the time I get the mooring, delivery, sales tax, reoutfit the boat with new electronics, new rigging, on and on...I have a total project cost of $60,349.....take a look here:
Boat and Immediate Costs
Item Cost
Boat $37,000
Sales Tax $2,683
Survey $360
Crane Hiost $250
Rig Tuning $200
Avila Mooring $2,600
Delivery Captain $800
2 Month of Slip in Santa Cruz $760
Insurance for 1yr $530
Steering System Service $300
Freshwater Pump replacement $150
Cost $45,633
Now throw in the things I want and need:
Needed Upgrades
Item Cost
New Propane Oven $1,187
New SS Rigging $2,000
Repaired Mast Step $400
Haul Out $125
Crane for Mast up/down $200
Radar $1,500
GPS/Chartplotter $650
New Head $300
Deck Paint $328
AntiSkid $200
Honda EU2000I Generator $900
New VHF $160
Sales Tax $576
New Running Rigging $250
Electrical System Rewire $500
Plumbing system rework $500
Through Hull connections $300
Helm Repainting $200
New 720AH Battery Bank $390
New Canvas work (sunbrella) $1,000
Speed/Wind/Depth Insts $1,000
Sextant $300
Spreader Lights $100
Bousin Chair $100
Dingy Davits (custom) $400
Solar power $700
Haul out yard for 30-days $450
Total $60,349
Now lets be realistic about this...if I was to buy a NEW 36ft Blue water sail boat....I would be spending at LEAST double to three times that figure....so after deducting out the proceeds form the MacGregor sail...I am still looking at close to 35K...to be spent over the next few years to make her into my dream boat. To me...there is no other smart decision than to buy old and refit....cost....knowing the boat inside and out....saving $ by doing some of the work yourself...and one big one is the Pearson 365's reputation for the last 28yrs! It has safely taken people around the world and back!
One more thing....Randy...you will soon find out that there is no such thing as the "perfect boat"......

As I mentioned before, Molly's dad bought an almost new boat (1 1/2 years old at the time) costing 250,000 and it still cost an extra $30,000 getting it ready to go cruising (water maker, SSB , safety equip., generator, extra fuel tanks etc...)
Sounds like your homework is done...now it is time to buy it and sell the other. Let's get out and sail.

True enough, Steve. And the reason there are few ports along California's central coast ??? Because that stretch of coastline is mainly a cliffside of the coastal range. There is Hwy 1 along the coast, but there are few east-west roads that even reach the coast for that entire stretch. No safe harbor for his entire southbound cruise, Monterey Bay to Morro Bay, cause there are no coastal cities, no ports, just Hearst Castle clinging to the mountain side.Catigale wrote:I think there is a big difference between bringing a boat from Boston to Florida, where numerous ports, CG and ICW all give you a multitude of options for bailing out in weather, and Rich's trip where AFAIK there are only a few port options on the way, so the chance of getting stuck due to engine failure, for example, are much greater.
Pictured below is the central Calif coast from Monterey Bay to the Santa Barbara Channel. The Golden Gate into SF Bay is another 50 miles north. Fortunately, prevailing current and wind are from NNW (or direct West wind), so his southerly course will be downwind or beam reaching. (If Rich's Pearson makes 5 knots OG, it would be about 36 hours under sail, 4 am, through the next night, plus another day to 4 pm .... I've never sailed at night ...
Rich's cruise won't actually reach Pt. Conception (noted earlier as a severe challenge) but the NorCoastal weather and sea conditions are definitely challenging in their own right. And you're correct, a cantankerous engine would mean you MUST sail along a lee shore, regardless of the the wind and sea conditions ... no dropping sails & relying on a big motor ... no scooting into a marina along this stretch of coast. If he buys the boat in Santa Cruz, Rich's trip would be "across" Monterey Bay and southeast to the vicinity of Arroyo Grande, about two-thirds along map below. Rich's home port is around Pt. Conception (bottom) and east along Sta.Barbara Channel to the eastern edge of the relief map. Also shown are 4 of California's 7 Channel Islands, which was my favorite cruise in past five years (due south of Rich's home port is Anacapa Island, the tiny dot).

ETA: edited the relief map (just learning to fuss around in Paint Shop Pro).

As far as Minnesota....I haven't been making as many trips back there lately and may not have to go back...as the company I have been working for could be on its last legs. Hence...then reason for the boat now..I mught have the time! When I did travel to MN, it was mainly to Bloomington, but we did spend a year up in Grand Rapids....Cold...Cold...Cold...this time a year...I sure won't be missing that!
sale of the mac
Rich,
You have to admit though that it is a "dry" cold.
(Actually this year it has been a mild winter. I live in the Eveleth, MN area, about an hour or so away from Grand Rapids.)
Hope things go well with the sale of your Mac.

I did it! I am now the owner of a bonifide Money Pit...a Pearson 365 Ketch! And on my first day of ownership what did I do? I signed a PO for $3700 for a bottom job consisting of: 3-new brass through hull fittings with ball valves, new zinks, repairing of a few osmotic blisters, sanding and applying bottom paint....hu-ra....
....and for my next feat...I'm waiting on the price quote to re-rig the standing rigging which is the original 1978 SS. That should be between $2500-3500.....

Wonderful..Wonderful...I am so jealous. If I could only get Jim to give up the old cars...I could move aboard a bigger boat.
Keep in touch with the board. Even though we all love our Macs be they S,X,M's...I know most of us dream of a true liveaboard. I will be watching for your adventures as I do all of the ones on this board.
