Okay, Wings is beating three J boats whose sails cost more than your boat , car , and house put together....whose winning now?

S/he is a good one to chase as that's pretty impressive...

I was forced to retire from the Edgartown classic after beating the Js 5 years straight.

With a VMG of 3.1, it must have been a real drifter of a race. I'll bet the 26 has a huge spinnaker.

Yeah, 8 knots is a difficult wind to work with. Very hard to keep 4 knots in that wind.

No the 25 mile race is main and jib only. The 50 mile race is spinnaker. The race started at 5pm and I crossed the finish line around 2:05am.

I would love that race. I woud waddle to the start line, fire up the BBQ, do some steaks, wine, and probably still have wine left to watch you finish....

Never shall cruisers and racers mix......

Why not? If you do not mix it up once in a while it gets boring!

I agree, I have had more fun and feelings of accomplishment with this hobby since I began racing the D. As far as 'mixing things up', I may have gone a little further than expected. My D was T-boned in a collision between races on Utah Lake this June. The prow of the other boat pushed over the top of the rubrail and extended into the back starboard side of the cabin. Wisely (sheer random luck), I had insured the ole girl this year. Doing the repair myself and the hole is now gone both inside and out, with just the final gelcoat finishing left undone.

The boat that hit me, also beat me in the next race, fast little double-ender. The next day, hole damage and all, was a light air day and I won the race and the series, though the field had narrowed down so much it wasn't much to brag about.

Different year but still getting the same result. Race 1 finished 3rd behind 2 Olsen 30s, they were in Division 1, They had me in Division 2, field was 15 boats. Race 2 very light air, Windancer was 1st. Race 3 winds at 7mph gusting to 13 or more. I got a poor start and finished 5th. also had some rounding up problems since I shortened the rudder back to stock length. Received a first place metal for Division 1. Nice club to race with, even included 2 BBQ meals with entry fee. Ate lunch with the sailor that T-boned me last year. :o

Hi Newell,

What's your handicap? I posted about a local race and the 26D Miss Runaway completed with No Flying Sails and DNF. She was Handicapped at 271 the last boat to finish 40 min ahead of her was a Tanzer 26 handicapped at 237 also NFS I believe. You need to come up here next May and show us what a Mac can really do! I'll happily crew for you and get as much local knowledge as I can for the race. I'm hoping to come to Havasu in a couple years for the big trailer sailor regatta in February.

Also might see you as you round Prevost in Fast Sunday this summer.

Newell,

I had some contact with the Race Chair, he passed along some photos I had to the skippers of the respective boats. No Flying Sails basically means No Spinnaker, I'm sure there are other less common sails in the definition but practically speaking it refers to no spinnaker on board. In the 42 miles around an Island (all points of sail) no spinnaker can mean not making a narrows within a tide window etc. and that can be a terrible handicap in this race. I was intrigued though since the Tanzer was also NFS and still rated 40s/mile faster. Maybe the local handicapper takes more things into consideration like the age of Genoa and Main. Could be a lot of things since I don't know any more about Miss Runaway.

Anyway are you thinking you'll hit Prevost in the middle of the Dates you posted?

Hoping you have a great Cruise this summer!

Well, I finally passed the 26D that was the subject of this post originally today... in my 38'.

The 26D is an amazingly fast boat. In the same wind on the same course it took a LONG time for the 38 to pass her by in her lee. And we never really left them behind.

10 knots of wind, both boats were doing between 5 and 6 knots.
